Freezing Rain Returns: Another Storm to Hit the GTA Midweek
Well, it looks like Mother Nature isn’t quite done with us yet. Just as parts of Ontario continue to recover from a devastating ice storm that left over 400,000 people in the dark, Environment Canada has issued another special weather statement. More freezing rain is expected to sweep through the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) this Wednesday, bringing challenging conditions yet again.
This incoming system is set to move in from just east of Lake Huron on Wednesday morning, eventually spreading across eastern Ontario by the afternoon. Areas like York Region, Halton Region, and Durham Region are expected to be hit the hardest. The precipitation could start as snow and ice pellets before transitioning into freezing rain. To make matters worse, gusty winds of up to 50 km/h may worsen the existing damage to trees and power lines.

As temperatures rise throughout the day, the freezing rain will gradually shift into regular rainfall by the evening. However, the impacts could still be significant. Ice accumulation is forecasted to reach up to 5 mm in some areas, while rainfall totals could range from 30 to 50 mm in Toronto and Peel Region. There’s even the possibility of thunderstorms, which could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas.
For those still dealing with power outages from the previous storm, this is certainly unwelcome news. Hydro One has been working tirelessly to restore service, and while more than half a million customers have had their power restored, around 280,000 homes and businesses remain in the dark. Some of the hardest-hit areas, like Orillia and Peterborough, may not see full restoration until Friday.
With this new system approaching, residents are advised to take precautions. If you’re commuting, be prepared for slick roads and possible delays. Keep an eye on weather updates, and if you’re in an area prone to flooding, be extra cautious.
Winter may be officially over, but it’s clear that the season isn’t quite ready to let go just yet. Stay safe and stay prepared as we brace for yet another round of challenging weather in the GTA.
