Honouring Terry Fox and the Unforgettable Legacy of Eddie Nolan
Today, I want to talk about something truly inspiring—something that hits close to the heart of every Canadian: the legacy of Terry Fox and the powerful way people continue to carry his mission forward. This weekend in Montreal, hundreds gathered not just to run, but to remember. Among them, the memory of a man named Eddie Nolan stood strong. Eddie wasn’t just another participant in the Terry Fox Run—he was a force. Before he passed away last year, Eddie had raised over $1 million for cancer research, proving that the Marathon of Hope lives on in many forms, through many feet.
As we approach the 45th anniversary of Terry Fox dipping his prosthetic leg into the Atlantic Ocean on April 12, 1980, it’s incredible to see how far his dream has come. Back then, cancer research was in its infancy, and yet Terry, at just 21 years old, saw a future where things could be better. His run ended before he could finish, but his story didn’t. His determination lit a fire in this country that still burns today.

Dr. André Veillette, an oncologist who followed Terry’s journey as a medical student, recently reflected on the progress made in cancer research. He credits Terry with waking up the public to the urgent need for funding and awareness. From barely knowing how cancer truly worked, to now identifying oncogenes and tailoring immunotherapies, the medical community has made monumental strides. But as Dr. Veillette says, we’re not at the finish line yet. Cancer is complex, and the race Terry started is more like a marathon than a sprint—one we all must continue to run.
Terry’s brother Fred still travels to schools across the country, sharing the story of a young man who turned pain into purpose. Terry may have died young, but in the eyes of every student who learns about him, he’s forever that 21-year-old running across Canada with hope in his heart. That’s the power of his legacy.
This year’s Terry Fox Run is set for September 14, with registration now open. And as we lace up our shoes once more, let’s remember not just Terry, but the Eddie Nolans of the world—those who picked up the torch and carried it with passion, one dollar, one step, one life at a time. Because this isn’t just a story of running. It’s a story of resilience, of community, and of a belief that together, we can outrun even the darkest challenges.
