James Gunn Unveils New Superman Footage at CinemaCon

Alright, folks, let’s talk about one of the biggest moments from CinemaCon—James Gunn and his team have just dropped brand-new footage of Superman , and let me tell you, it’s got everyone talking! DC Studios is betting big on this film, and from what we saw, it looks like they might just have a winner on their hands.

James Gunn himself took the stage in Las Vegas alongside his co-chief at DC Studios, Peter Safran, and the film’s lead stars—David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The audience was treated to never-before-seen footage, which gave us our first real glimpse of Superman in action alongside his trusty companion, Krypto.

The clip starts with Superman, injured, crashing into the Arctic and calling out for Krypto. The super-powered pup doesn’t disappoint—he arrives in a flurry of snow, playfully knocking Superman around before dragging him toward the Fortress of Solitude. What follows is a mix of humor and spectacle, as we see Superman being taken care of by robotic assistants inside the fortress. One particularly funny moment? Superman tries to thank them, only for one of the robots to deadpan, “No need to thank us, sir, as we will not appreciate it.” The crowd erupted in laughter!

During the panel, Gunn reflected on how he was originally offered Superman back in 2018 but chose to direct The Suicide Squad instead. He admitted he wasn’t sure how to approach the iconic character at the time, but the idea stuck with him, and years later, inspiration struck. Gunn said he wanted to tell a story that felt human, even with all the fantastical elements, and emphasized that this movie is ultimately about kindness and love.

David Corenswet, stepping into the role of Superman, shared his excitement about bringing the beloved character to life. He described one particularly intense scene he filmed with Rachel Brosnahan, which involved eating a lot of pancakes over two days of shooting. Brosnahan couldn’t help but joke, “So glad that was the most memorable part for you.”

Nicholas Hoult, playing Lex Luthor, had his own standout moment, recalling a time on set when he watched Corenswet as Superman and thought, “I felt like I was witnessing the magic of cinema in real time.”

And let’s not forget about Krypto! Gunn revealed that the character was inspired by his own dog, Ozu, though he quickly clarified that, unlike Krypto, Ozu is far from heroic. “Ozu is terrible to anyone who comes near him,” Gunn laughed. He even joked about how Ozu destroyed his laptop and shoes, leading him to think, “What if this dog had superpowers? I’d be doomed.”

With the film set to hit theaters on July 11, Warner Bros. is hoping for a massive win, especially after a series of struggles at the box office. The cast is stacked with talented actors, including Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. Gunn, who both wrote and directed the film, promises a Superman story that blends epic action, humor, and heart.

So, are we ready to believe a man can fly again? It sure looks like James Gunn is about to make us believe!
