Lizzo Redefines 'Weight Loss' as 'Weight Release'—Thanks to Love and Self-Worth
So, I was just listening to Lizzo talk on Jay Shetty’s podcast On Purpose weight release , and honestly, I love that so much more.
Lizzo shared that it was her boyfriend, Myke Wright, who kind of sparked this shift in her mindset. She told this funny but profound little story about how she excitedly said she lost five pounds, and Myke just looked at her and asked, “Where did it go?” At first, she was a little annoyed, like, “Why would he say that?” But that one question made her stop and think— wait, what am I really saying when I talk about weight like it’s something I lost?

And that’s when it clicked for her: she didn’t want to “lose” anything. She wanted to gain —gain confidence, gain health, gain a lifestyle that feels good and sustainable. She literally said, “I think I want to win.” And isn't that such a powerful shift?
She’s been super intentional about how she talks about her body now because she knows her words matter. Lizzo knows people—especially young people—are watching her and learning from her. She even admitted she used to internalize so many toxic messages from media growing up. So now, she’s doing the work to reframe those old ideas. Like, when those harmful thoughts pop up—because let’s be real, they still do—she says she “swats them away like a fly.” I love that image.
Lizzo also pointed out that the weight she released wasn’t just physical. It was emotional, mental—so much more than just pounds on a scale. She’s found a new way of living that she actually enjoys. She’s learned about nutrition, about the science of cardio and strength training, and how it all works for her . She’s not doing it to shrink herself for the world—she’s doing it to show up more fully as herself.
And the love she has for Myke? That’s the kind of supportive, healthy relationship that lifts you up and challenges you to grow in the best way. She even said in a past interview that he’s the person she sees herself with for the rest of her life. That’s beautiful.
So yeah, Lizzo isn’t “losing” anything. She’s releasing what no longer serves her—and in return, she’s gaining so much more. And I think that’s something we could all learn from.
