Mason Greenwood Faces Fresh Turmoil Amid Marseille Dressing Room Drama
Mason Greenwood is back in the spotlight—and not for the reasons he’d hope. Once hailed as a rising star at Manchester United, Greenwood’s journey at Marseille is now clouded by controversy, dressing room drama, and public scrutiny. His once-promising season in Ligue 1 has taken a nosedive, sparking conversations about his attitude, performance, and place in the team.
After an explosive start to life in France, Greenwood’s form has fizzled out during a crucial run of games for Marseille. Despite notching up 16 league goals in 29 appearances—making him the second-highest scorer in the division—his recent displays have drawn harsh criticism. Then came the reports of unrest in the dressing room. Whispers began circulating that teammates Adrien Rabiot and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg had allegedly demanded Greenwood—and Brazilian winger Luis Henrique—be removed from the squad. That rumor quickly snowballed into a headline-grabbing controversy, implying a fractured squad and a player falling out of favor with his peers.
But Marseille’s director of football, Medhi Benatia, was having none of it. He dismissed the claims outright, saying they were entirely fabricated. “Can you imagine?” he said in disbelief. “Do you think I need a player to tell me that? Rabiot and Højbjerg are ultimate professionals. They only want to push the team toward Champions League qualification.” Benatia made it clear that neither player approached him to oust Greenwood or anyone else.
The club currently sits third in Ligue 1, clinging to the final Champions League spot with just five games left and Lyon breathing down their necks. The tension in the squad is palpable, and De Zerbi’s tactics and leadership have also come under fire. However, Benatia insisted there’s no mutiny against the coach, stating, “He hasn’t lost the dressing room. If anything, he gives too much love to the players. I want workers, not best friends.”
Greenwood’s future at Marseille, and perhaps in European football altogether, hangs in the balance. From promising prodigy at Old Trafford to a divisive figure in Ligue 1, the 23-year-old must now decide whether he’ll rise to the occasion or become a cautionary tale of talent unfulfilled.
