PGMOL Admits Error in Tarkowski Decision – Controversy Erupts
Well, folks, here we go again – another Merseyside derby, another major refereeing controversy. This time, all eyes are on James Tarkowski's reckless challenge on Alexis Mac Allister during Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Everton. A challenge that many believe should have resulted in a straight red card was only met with a yellow, and now the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has admitted that an error was made.
It happened in the 11th minute – a loose ball, Tarkowski lunges in, and boom – his studs catch Mac Allister just below the knee. Referee Sam Barrott quickly brandished a yellow card, but it was clear from the first replay that this was a borderline leg-breaker. Everyone watching expected VAR to step in. However, shockingly, VAR official Paul Tierney conducted only a brief 10-second check and decided not to intervene.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot was baffled, saying even neutral fans could see it was a blatant red. Even Everton’s own boss, David Moyes, admitted Tarkowski was lucky to stay on the pitch. The frustration didn't end there – former players and referees have since weighed in, questioning how such a dangerous challenge wasn’t reviewed more thoroughly.
Former referee Mike Dean was stunned, calling it a “terrible challenge” and insisting that Tierney should have sent Tarkowski off. Ex-Everton striker Duncan Ferguson had no doubts either, branding it a clear red. Meanwhile, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher pointed out that the on-field referee had the perfect view and still got it wrong. So, what is VAR there for if not to correct these mistakes?
As if that wasn’t enough, Everton fans were left fuming over Liverpool’s winning goal, arguing that Diogo Jota’s strike should have been ruled offside. The debate surrounding officiating consistency is louder than ever, with fans calling for more accountability from referees and VAR officials.
At the end of the day, PGMOL has now admitted its mistake – but it’s too little, too late for Everton. Liverpool takes the win and inches closer to the title, while fans are left asking the same old question: when will VAR finally get it right?
