PlayStation Plus Price Hike Hits Canada and Türkiye Amid Growing Gamer Frustration

Hey folks, big update in the gaming world that’s got a lot of us raising our eyebrows—or outright shaking our heads. If you haven’t heard yet, Sony has just confirmed that the price of PlayStation Plus is going up again, this time targeting subscribers in Canada and Türkiye. Yeah, you heard that right—after already raising prices in countries like Australia, Brazil, and across Latin America and Asia, Sony's rolling out even more increases starting June 24, 2025.

Let’s break this down a bit. In Canada, this change hits the one-year subscription plans across all tiers. The Essential tier, which used to cost $94.99 CAD, is now going up to $109.99. Extra jumps from $154.99 to $189.99 CAD, and the Premium plan? That’s moving from $189.99 to a whopping $224.99 CAD. These aren't small changes—we're talking about a 20-30% increase depending on the plan.

And Türkiye? Things are even more drastic. The Premium tier is seeing a near 55% spike—from ₺2,740 to ₺4,266 per year. The Extra tier goes from ₺2,340 to ₺3,645. We still don’t know the exact bump for the Essential plan there, but safe to say, it’s not going to be pretty.

Sony says this is to keep delivering “high-quality games and benefits.” Look, I get that inflation and global economic challenges are real. But many gamers are finding it harder and harder to justify the cost—especially when the benefits don’t seem to scale with the price hikes. The timing also feels off, especially after recent increases to PlayStation 5 console prices in various regions.

It’s no surprise that the community's reaction has been heated. Social media is full of posts from long-time subscribers saying they won’t be renewing. Some are switching to PC gaming, others sticking with free-to-play titles or single-player games they already own. A few lucky ones managed to renew just before the hike kicked in—talk about good timing.

Honestly, it’s starting to feel like the subscription model we all bought into is shifting under our feet. What used to be a great deal for online play, cloud saves, and a few free monthly games is now pushing the limits of what many are willing—or able—to pay. And with each increase, Sony risks alienating the very player base that helped elevate the PlayStation brand to where it is today.

We’ll see if they offer any compelling Black Friday or holiday discounts later this year to win people back. But until then, it’s hard not to feel like we’re paying more and getting less.
