Porro’s Magic Rescues Spurs in Tense Europa League Battle
So, Tottenham fans had their hearts in their mouths again — a typical rollercoaster at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Spurs clawed their way to a 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final. And if we’re being real, this was one of those nights where Ange Postecoglou must have walked off wondering how his team didn’t come away with a win.
It all started in the worst possible way. Just six minutes in, Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitiké — a name we’re probably going to hear a lot more of come summer — lit the place up. He carved his way through Tottenham’s backline like he was gliding on ice, eventually smashing a low finish past Vicario to silence the home crowd. Honestly, you could feel the collective sigh across the stadium — same old Spurs, right?

But they responded. And boy did Pedro Porro come up with a piece of absolute brilliance. James Maddison, who had a shaky start losing the ball for the first goal, made amends by swinging in a teasing ball, and Porro — in full flair mode — flicked it with the back of his heel into the net. You just had to appreciate the class. Suddenly, the place came alive again.
From there, Spurs went for it. Lucas Bergvall was everywhere — a teenager playing like he’s been in the game for a decade. He hit the woodwork with a 30-yard screamer that could’ve been the goal of the season. Bentancur was back from suspension and looked sharp, also smashing the bar with a powerful header. Son had his moments, Maddison kept pushing, and even Micky van de Ven nearly won it in stoppage time with a towering header that Frankfurt’s keeper did brilliantly to tip over.
But for all the pressure, the goal just didn’t come. Postecoglou, clearly feeling the heat, waited till late to change things up — bringing on Richarlison and a couple of others with just over 10 minutes left. Brennan Johnson had a golden chance to snatch the win, but skied it, and that pretty much summed up Tottenham’s night: flashes of brilliance, plenty of effort, but lacking that clinical edge.
Still, this wasn’t a bad result. Frankfurt came with a game plan, frustrated Spurs early, and will feel confident heading home with the tie level. But if Tottenham can replicate that second-half intensity next week in Germany, they’ve got every chance. The key will be silencing what’s sure to be a ferocious crowd at Deutsche Bank Park.
Postecoglou might be under pressure, but if there’s one thing this match showed, it’s that the belief in the squad is still alive — just barely. One more big performance, and this European run could still have legs. Let’s hope the football gods are listening this time.
