Rain and Disruption as UK Swaps Sunshine for Storms This Easter

So, just when we thought spring had finally settled in with those unusually warm and dry April days, the British weather decides to do what it does best—flip the script completely. The sunshine has officially taken a backseat, and the Met Office is waving yellow warnings across large parts of the UK. We’re in for a proper dose of April showers—and then some.

If you've been enjoying the unusually dry spell, brace yourself. Wales, western England, and Northern Ireland are now under rainfall warnings as a slow-moving band of heavy rain makes its way through the region. We’re talking serious rainfall too—some places could see up to 75mm, which is basically a whole month’s worth of rain crammed into 48 hours. And along with that comes the potential for localized flooding, road closures, and travel disruptions, especially from Tuesday into Wednesday.

And it doesn’t end there. As the rain shifts, Northern Ireland gets its fair share on Wednesday with more showers and even a few thunderstorms in the mix. Hills in Antrim and Down might see up to 60mm of rain, so anyone in those areas should definitely stay weather-aware.

On top of that, gusty winds are set to pick up, particularly affecting southern coasts, the Channel Islands, and inland areas across England and Wales. Wind speeds might not be extreme, but they’ll be strong enough to cause additional travel headaches and potentially knock around some outdoor setups—so if you've got garden furniture or Easter decorations out, you might want to bring them in.

The temperatures are taking a dip too, falling back to typical mid-April averages—think 10 to 17 degrees Celsius during the day and chilly nights that could still bring pockets of frost, especially up north.

Now, here’s the twist. While the start of April was all calm and sunny thanks to a ‘blocked’ weather pattern—where high pressure kept everything dry and still—the jet stream has now dipped south. That shift is dragging low pressure systems directly over the UK, which is why we’re suddenly in the thick of unsettled, rainy weather.

As for Easter weekend? It's looking mixed. Good Friday might start off wet for western areas with heavy outbreaks, while the east could hold onto some dry spells. The rest of the weekend is still a bit of a toss-up, with low and high pressure systems jostling for control. It won’t be a total washout, but don’t count on barbecue weather either. There will be dry moments, a bit of sunshine here and there, but the brolly definitely needs to stay close by.

So, if you’re planning Easter egg hunts or spring getaways, it’s probably best to have a backup plan indoors. Keep an eye on local weather updates, especially if you’re traveling. And hey—this is Britain, after all. A bit of weather drama just comes with the territory.
