Sunny Skies Return as UK Braces for Mini Heatwave This May
Alright, let’s talk weather – and for once, I’ve actually got some great news. After what’s felt like an endless stretch of soggy skies, sudden downpours, and chilly winds, the UK is finally about to catch a proper break. Yep, forecasters are calling it: a mini heatwave is on its way, and it’s going to give us a much-needed taste of summer right at the start of May.
If you’ve been battling through rain-soaked mornings and unpredictable weather during the Easter bank holiday, you’re not alone. While the eastern parts of the country stayed mostly dry, the rest of the UK – especially the north and west – took the brunt of it with heavy rain and grey skies. But now, all that seems to be shifting, and it’s thanks to a welcome change in the pressure systems.

Starting Friday, May 2nd, a high-pressure front is moving in and with it comes a rise in temperatures. According to the latest WXCharts data, large swaths of the country will be bathed in warm air, with parts of East Anglia expected to reach highs of 22°C. That’s right – we’re officially talking T-shirt weather. The south of England isn’t far behind either, looking at a comfortable 20-21°C across the weekend.
Now, not everyone’s going to feel the full heatwave effect. Areas like Devon, Dorset, Somerset, and up through Yorkshire might not get the same spike in temps, hovering instead in the mid to high teens. But hey, even that is a far cry from the dreary drizzle we’ve had to endure lately.
And the good news doesn’t stop there. This mini heatwave could stick around for a while. Some forecasters are predicting up to three weeks of sunshine extending into mid-May, possibly culminating in the hottest day of the year so far with temperatures hitting 25°C. That’s a proper prelude to summer if you ask me.
Of course, it won’t be flawless everywhere and forever. Northern parts of the country and Scotland may still see a return to cooler, unsettled conditions now and again. But on the whole, this is shaping up to be one of the best weather streaks we’ve seen in 2025 so far.
So, if you’ve got a garden, a balcony, or even just a sunny window spot – now’s the time to enjoy it. Get the sunglasses out, plan that picnic or barbecue, and make the most of this sunny streak while it lasts. After all, in true British fashion, we know it’s not going to last forever – but we’ll definitely take it while we can!
