Tesco and More: Easter Bank Holiday Opening Hours You Need to Know

Hey everyone, with the Easter Bank Holiday weekend upon us, it’s the perfect time to plan your shopping—especially if you want to avoid turning up to a closed store! Whether you’re looking to grab last-minute chocolate eggs, top up the fridge for a family feast, or just pop out for essentials, knowing which supermarkets are open and when could save you a lot of hassle.

So, let’s talk Tesco first, since it’s one of the UK’s biggest chains. On Good Friday, most large Tesco stores across England and Wales will open from 6am to 10pm—plenty of time to get your shopping done. If you're in Scotland or Northern Ireland, or you're heading to a Tesco Express, those will be trading normal hours throughout the Easter period. Just a heads-up though—on Easter Sunday, all the big Tesco stores in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland will be shut, with only Scottish stores remaining open. Then on Easter Monday, most stores in England and Wales open from 8am to 6pm, while in Northern Ireland it’s 10am to 8pm, and Scotland continues with 8am to 10pm.

Moving on to other big names—Sainsbury’s will be open 7am to 10pm on Good Friday and Saturday, totally closed on Easter Sunday except in Scotland, and then back again Monday from 8am to 8pm. Asda has a similar setup: open 7am to 10pm Friday and Saturday, closed Sunday, and open 8am to 10pm on Easter Monday.

Marks & Spencer stores are mostly open 8am to 8pm on Good Friday and Easter Monday, but closed Sunday. Waitrose will operate reduced hours too—8am to 8pm Friday and Monday, normal Saturday hours, and shut on Sunday except for some Little Waitrose stores.

Aldi and Lidl will both be closed on Easter Sunday, but open normal hours on the surrounding days, with reduced hours Monday in Aldi’s case. The Co-op’s more relaxed—many of their convenience stores will be open all weekend, although larger stores will shut on Sunday.

Primark, if you're planning some fashion shopping, will be closed on Easter Sunday in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, but open all weekend in Scotland. Hours do vary though, so definitely worth checking your local store's times online before heading out. John Lewis, Boots, and Next follow similar patterns—closed Sunday, open on Good Friday and Easter Monday, but do vary by location.

Long story short—Good Friday and Easter Monday are mostly fine for shopping, but Easter Sunday is when you’re most likely to be met with locked doors. Always a good idea to double-check online for your nearest store just to be sure, especially if you’re planning a special meal or family gathering.

So, if you're like me and always forget to stock up until the last minute—this is your sign! Plan ahead, shop smart, and enjoy the long weekend.
