Tragedy at FSU: A Community Shaken by Campus Shooting
Hey everyone, I wanted to take a few moments to talk about the heartbreaking incident that unfolded at Florida State University in Tallahassee. It’s something that's shaken not only the FSU community but really everyone who hears about it.
Earlier today, a shooting on campus claimed the lives of two individuals and left six others injured. Authorities quickly responded and have confirmed that the suspect is in custody — a 20-year-old man who is, incredibly, the son of a local sheriff’s deputy. Reports say he had access to one of his mother’s firearms, which was used during the attack. What’s really disturbing is that he drove onto campus in an orange Hummer, casually dressed like any other student, and opened fire near the student union.
It’s chilling how fast things escalated. Students were studying, grabbing lunch, hanging out — then chaos. Some ran for cover, others barricaded themselves inside buildings with stacked chairs and trash cans, trying to stay safe. One student described hiding in a basement hallway, feeling his heart race but trying to stay calm enough to help lead others to safety. Another student saw the shooter fire a rifle, then switch to a pistol and shoot someone at point blank range. It’s just horrifying.
The suspect is known to some students from a political group he previously attended. He had reportedly expressed far-right, white supremacist views — so much so that he was asked not to return to the club. According to several members, he would often cross the line during political discussions. It's deeply unsettling that such a warning sign wasn’t enough to prevent what happened today.

The Tallahassee Police Chief confirmed that officers engaged the shooter and shot him after he refused to comply with their commands. He survived and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. It’s a miracle that the response was as swift as it was — officials are crediting the bravery of campus police for preventing even more loss of life.
FSU President Richard McCullough visited some of the wounded in the hospital and described the officers as heroes. He gave an emotional statement, saying the university is heartbroken and focused right now on caring for everyone affected. Governor Ron DeSantis also expressed his condolences, calling the victims “fellow Seminoles” and pledging full support to the university.
It’s truly a dark day for FSU. Classes and campus activities are canceled through the weekend, and the university is offering counseling and support at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center for anyone in need.
I think what hits hardest is how normal everything seemed before it happened. This is the kind of tragedy you never expect to be so close to home. Students and faculty came face to face with something no one should ever have to experience — gun violence at a place meant for learning, growth, and community.
And honestly, it raises yet another question — how many more of these will we hear about before something changes? A freshman said it best: "It just can’t keep happening." Yet it does. Over and over.
Let’s keep FSU in our hearts today. Let’s also keep asking the hard questions, because the status quo is clearly not working.
Stay safe, everyone.
