Tragedy in Windellama: A Community Shaken by a Young Life Lost

It’s one of those stories that punches you right in the chest—the kind you never expect to hear, especially when it involves someone so young. A peaceful Sunday morning in the quiet rural community of Windellama, just outside of Goulburn in New South Wales, turned tragic when a nine-year-old boy lost his life in what authorities are calling an accidental shooting.

At around 11:20am, emergency services rushed to a property in Fernleigh Close after reports of a firearm incident. What they found was heartbreaking: a young boy suffering from critical neck injuries after the accidental discharge of a gun. Paramedics did everything they could, but despite their efforts, the child died at the scene. Police from the Hume District were on hand and have launched an investigation, with the matter now in the hands of the coroner.

The news has left locals stunned. Ron Wenban, a neighbour living just two doors down, shared that he was outside enjoying the morning with his partner when he heard a single gunshot ring out. "It’s rare to hear one shot here," he said. At first, he wasn’t sure what it was, but when the emergency helicopter arrived not long after, he knew something serious had happened. “Once the chopper came over, I said to my partner, ‘someone’s been hurt,’” he recalled. Like many in the area, Ron didn’t know the family well. They were from Sydney and had purchased the property five years ago as a weekend getaway.

Windellama, a small town with a population of just over 400, isn’t the sort of place where tragedy knocks often. The town is close-knit, quiet, and surrounded by nature. Now, it’s been rocked by a loss that no one could have seen coming.

At this point, police are treating the incident as non-suspicious, and no one has been arrested. Still, the questions linger—how could something like this happen? Who was responsible for the firearm? And most hauntingly, could it have been prevented?

This tragic event serves as a painful reminder of the responsibilities that come with firearm ownership, especially in rural settings where they’re more commonplace. While the full story will eventually come to light through the investigation, what’s certain now is that a young life has been lost far too soon, and a family is left devastated.

As Windellama grieves, the rest of us can only hope that the heartbreak of this moment sparks deeper conversations about safety, supervision, and the real risks that come with firearms in family environments.
