Utah Hockey Club Shuts Down Flames with Vejmelka's Heroics

What a night of hockey in Salt Lake City! The Utah Hockey Club came out strong and took down the Calgary Flames 3-1 at the Delta Center, with goaltender Karel Vejmelka putting on an absolute clinic between the pipes. He racked up an impressive 32 saves, proving to be the backbone of Utah's victory. This win marks Utah’s second straight, pushing their record to 34-29-12 as they fight for a stronger position in the standings. Meanwhile, the Flames, now at 35-27-12, have hit a rough patch, losing three of their last four games.

The action started in the first period when Kevin Stenlund found the back of the net at 17:46, thanks to a sweet setup from Alex Kerfoot. That quick one-timer put Utah ahead 1-0 and set the tone for the rest of the game. The Flames thought they had an answer early in the second period when Mikael Backlund’s shot deflected off Utah defenseman Nick DeSimone and seemed to cross the goal line. But after a video review by the NHL Situation Room, it was ruled no goal—tough break for Calgary.

Utah wasted no time capitalizing on that momentum. Just 32 seconds later, Barrett Hayton doubled Utah's lead with a beautiful backhand shot that beat Flames goalie Dustin Wolf on the blocker side. Calgary finally got on the board at 13:00 of the second period, when Rasmus Andersson blasted a shot from the point past Vejmelka’s glove, bringing the Flames within one.

But Utah wasn’t about to let this one slip away. They held their ground defensively, with Vejmelka making key saves to keep Calgary from equalizing. And with just 18 seconds left in regulation, Clayton Keller sealed the deal with an empty-netter, making it a 3-1 final.

This game was all about Utah’s resilience and Vejmelka’s stellar goaltending. With their playoff hopes still alive, the Utah Hockey Club is heating up at just the right time, while the Flames will need to regroup quickly to avoid slipping further in the standings. What a game!
