Walmart Boycott Sparks Consumer Action Across North Carolina
Hey everyone, I want to take a moment to talk about something that's been creating a buzz lately—yes, I’m talking about the Walmart boycott that officially kicked off on Monday, April 7. Whether you've heard about it in passing or you're just tuning in, here's the rundown and why it matters, especially for us here in North Carolina.
So, what's going on? This boycott isn’t just some random online trend—it’s a direct response to Walmart’s decision to scale back on its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives. Many see this rollback as a major step backwards, especially given the social momentum we've built in recent years around equality and inclusion. The move came after reported pressure from conservative groups, particularly after former President Donald Trump’s return to political prominence.

Now, a lot of consumers are saying enough is enough. They’re using their spending power to send a message, choosing not to shop at Walmart or any of its associated businesses for a full week—from April 7 through April 14. And just so you know, this isn't just about walking past the store. The boycott also covers Walmart’s online platforms, Sam’s Club, and even their private label brands like Great Value, Equate, and Mainstays.
Here in North Carolina, we’re looking at a pretty wide impact. There are 144 Walmart stores across the state, 43 neighborhood markets, five discount stores, and 22 Sam’s Club locations. That’s a lot of local business being put on pause—and that’s kind of the point. It’s a way for consumers to collectively say, “We see what you're doing, and we’re not okay with it.”
This boycott is just one part of a larger wave of organized consumer protests this year. It follows the ongoing 40-day “Target Fast,” which was launched during Lent and continues until April 17. That campaign is being led by Atlanta Pastor Jamal Bryant and other faith leaders. Meanwhile, The People’s Union USA, the group behind the Walmart boycott, has a packed protest calendar going all the way through July—including upcoming actions targeting General Mills, Amazon, and even a July 4th “Independence Day boycott.”
So yeah, this isn’t just a flash in the pan. It’s a growing movement where shoppers are choosing to stand up for values over convenience. Whether or not you personally join the boycott, it's a moment worth paying attention to. It shows just how powerful our choices can be when we make them together.
Let me know what you think about all this—are you participating or sitting it out? Either way, the conversation is definitely worth having.
