After 28 Years of Dedication, Reutlingen’s “Mister VHS” Says Servus
Today, I want to take a moment to reflect on the legacy of someone who has truly shaped the educational landscape in Reutlingen for nearly three decades. On May 28, Dr. Ulrich Bausch, affectionately known as "Mister VHS," will officially step into retirement after an impressive 28-year tenure as the head of the Reutlingen Volkshochschule and its affiliated programs.
Dr. Bausch is not just a name on a door—he’s been the guiding force behind the growth, evolution, and innovation of adult education in the region. Under his leadership, the VHS became more than a school; it turned into a cultural hub, a space for personal development, and a home for lifelong learning. Whether it was language classes, digital literacy, or political education, the offerings expanded significantly during his time. And most importantly, they remained accessible to people from all walks of life.

Now, as he prepares to pass the torch to his successor, Dr. Philipp Marquardt, Dr. Bausch leaves behind an organization that is not only well-structured but also rich with vision and purpose. He reflects on his journey with a sense of fulfillment—and rightfully so. His commitment, foresight, and calm but decisive leadership style earned him admiration far beyond the walls of the VHS.
This farewell isn’t just a professional goodbye—it’s a deeply personal moment for the community of Reutlingen. He’s been a constant presence for nearly three decades, a familiar face in town, and someone who always pushed for progress while keeping people at the center.
As he says "Servus," we aren’t just applauding his achievements—we're also celebrating the values he stood for: accessibility, education, dialogue, and growth. His retirement marks the end of a significant era, but his influence will remain part of the DNA of the VHS for years to come. So, thank you, Dr. Bausch, for 28 years of service, and Servus—not as a farewell, but as a nod to a new beginning.
