Arthur Fils Withdraws from Roland-Garros Due to Injury, Ending His 2025 Run Early

So here we are at Roland-Garros 2025, where every match counts and every round is a battle—but today, there’s some unfortunate news for fans of French tennis. Arthur Fils, the last remaining Frenchman in the men’s draw, has officially withdrawn from the tournament due to injury. His third-round match against Russia’s Andrey Rublev, scheduled for Saturday, will not take place.

It’s a real blow, especially considering how much heart and energy Fils put into his second-round victory over Jaume Munar. That match was a war. Fils fought through visible physical distress—cramps in his right thigh, back pain, and multiple visits from the physio. Despite all that, he dug deep, stretched himself to the limit, and managed to pull off a five-set win, earning his first-ever third-round appearance at Roland-Garros.

But sometimes, the body just says “enough.”

On Friday, there was already uncertainty about whether he’d be fit to play Rublev. He hadn’t trained at all that day and instead spent most of his time undergoing medical treatment. In his post-match press conference, which was significantly delayed by over three hours, Fils looked worn down. When asked if he’d be ready for his next match, his response—"Yes, I hope so"—was cautious, not confident.

And then, just before 9 p.m. on Friday evening, the French Tennis Federation confirmed what many feared: Fils was out. The statement was clear—injury forced the withdrawal. On Instagram, Fils himself said it best: “It’s with sadness that I have to pull out of this tournament I love so much. A difficult but necessary decision after medical advice.”

We don’t yet have full details on the nature of his injury—Fils has deferred any deeper explanation to a press conference scheduled for Saturday morning. But for now, Rublev advances to the fourth round without lifting his racket.

It’s disappointing, no doubt. Fils showed promise, grit, and determination. And in a tournament where French players have struggled to leave a mark in recent years, his early rounds gave the home crowd something to cheer about. But elite tennis is unforgiving. You can’t push a body beyond its limits without consequences.

We can only hope Arthur takes the time to recover fully and comes back stronger. Because if there’s one thing this Roland-Garros has proven, it’s that he belongs on this stage.
