Giant, Sweet UK Strawberries Are Taking Over the Summer of 2025
So here’s something juicy —literally. If you're a fan of strawberries, 2025 is already shaping up to be a record-breaking year, and not just because of the taste. We’re talking size too—some UK growers are reporting strawberries so big, you might struggle to fit them in your mouth!
Thanks to a rare weather combo of lots of spring sunshine and cool nighttime temperatures, strawberry crops across the UK are booming—and blooming—like never before. Growers from Kent to Somerset and West Sussex are all chiming in with the same message: this year’s berries are not only bigger, but sweeter and more flavourful.

Marion Regan, a veteran grower and MD of Hugh Lowe Farms in Kent, called it a “stonking start” to the season. She’s been growing strawberries for over 50 years, and even she’s impressed. According to her, the secret sauce is this unique spring weather pattern. Warm days help the fruit grow, but it’s those cool nights that really elevate the taste, allowing the strawberries to rest and redirect their energy into building up natural sugars.
Over at the Summer Berry Company in Colworth, their strawberries have been described as “giant”—some tipping the scales at 50 grams, the size of a plum or even a kiwi! Operations director Bartosz Pinkosz says he’s never seen anything like it in nearly two decades of growing. He credits the brightest March and April in over 100 years for this berry explosion.
Even with such a sweet success, there’s a cautious tone beneath the excitement. The dry spring is now being labelled as potentially the driest in more than a century. Growers are on alert, with drought conditions posing a real risk if the summer doesn’t bring some rain. That said, most commercial farms are well-prepared with efficient irrigation systems to make every drop of water count.
And there’s more good news for all of us who enjoy strawberries with a bit of flair. Experts are suggesting new flavour pairings—think strawberries with balsamic vinegar, or even a hint of chilli, to really bring out their rich, natural taste.
Last year’s wet and grey season delayed harvests and dulled the fruit. But not this time. The stars—and the weather—have aligned to give us a strawberry season to remember. So whether you're prepping for Wimbledon, baking a tart, or just popping them straight from the punnet, now’s the time to indulge. Just maybe grab a napkin... and maybe a knife and fork too. These berries are that big.
