Inside the Chilling Case of the Iced Coffee Killer: Justice or Misjudgment?

Have you ever heard of a crime so eerie, so cinematic, that it feels like it’s been lifted straight from a true-crime thriller? That’s exactly how the case of Jessica Wongso — dubbed the “Iced Coffee Killer” — hits you. And now, almost a decade after the murder that captivated both Indonesia and Australia, her story is being reignited in the latest 7News Spotlight special with Liam Bartlett.

In January 2016, Jessica Wongso, an Australian permanent resident and former NSW Ambulance worker, met up with her old best friend Mirna Salihin in an upscale café in Jakarta. They hadn’t seen each other in years. Jessica had pre-ordered Mirna an iced coffee. What followed was nothing short of horrifying — within moments of taking her first sip, Mirna began convulsing, foaming at the mouth, and was pronounced dead shortly after. Cyanide was later found in her system, and Jessica became the prime suspect. It was a headline-making case: betrayal, mystery, and a café crime scene in broad daylight.

This weekend, she sits down for the first time in a tell-all interview with investigative journalist Liam Bartlett. And it’s uncomfortable, intense, and impossible to look away from. Bartlett challenges her on everything: the motive of jealousy, her strange smirks during trial, the forensic evidence, and the timeline. Jessica, however, stays adamant — “They still can’t prove anything,” she claims.

Adding another layer to this already bizarre story, Bartlett also speaks with Kristie Carter, Jessica’s former boss in Australia. In her first and only public statement, Kristie details the erratic behavior she observed before the killing — behavior that, in hindsight, became chillingly relevant.

This whole case is like a psychological puzzle. Was Jessica Wongso a cold, calculating murderer who poisoned her best friend out of envy? Or is she the ultimate scapegoat — caught in a web of sensational headlines and emotional public sentiment? Liam Bartlett himself puts it best: “Either I’m sitting in front of a cold, calculated killer, or a terrible victim of circumstance.”

Regardless of where you stand, one thing’s for sure — this case will haunt you. It’s a brutal reminder that sometimes, the scariest stories are the ones that actually happened.
