Jeremy Clarkson’s Pub Plans Stir Local Drama in the Cotswolds
So, here’s the latest twist from the world of Jeremy Clarkson — and no, it’s not about a tractor or a cow this time. It’s pubs. Specifically, a rather charming and historic one in Bourton-on-the-Water called the Coach and Horses Inn. On his hit series Clarkson’s Farm , Clarkson revealed that he was considering buying this 18th-century pub located right across from his Hawkstone Brewery. Sounds like a match made in local business heaven, right? Well, not everyone agrees — particularly not the folks at Cotswold District Council, according to Clarkson.
In the episode, Clarkson claimed his pre-planning meeting with council representatives was met with what he described as “awkwardness” and a total lack of enthusiasm. He even went as far as saying, “They didn’t have a single positive thing to say.” In true Clarkson fashion, he hinted that the council was nervous he might actually succeed — and that success might bring an influx of visitors to the quiet area, something he implied they feared.

But here's where it gets juicy. The council immediately clapped back, telling the BBC they “absolutely refute” those claims. They said there were in fact several productive meetings with Clarkson’s team and described themselves as supportive of his vision. They even received a thank-you email from Clarkson’s planning agent, expressing appreciation for their openness.
It’s classic Clarkson — a bit of confrontation, a dash of miscommunication, and a whole lot of personality. What’s interesting, though, is that despite the public drama, no planning application was ever actually submitted. Clarkson eventually decided not to buy the pub, citing timing issues and production constraints with the show.
Meanwhile, over in Asthall, Clarkson did buy another pub — The Windmill — dropping nearly a million pounds on it, according to local reports. He and his partner Lisa Hogan were smitten with the place and dove headfirst into renovations. That venture, too, hasn't been without its own headaches — from missing glasses to horrific bathroom incidents requiring hazmat teams.
It’s not easy running a pub, it turns out — even when you’re Jeremy Clarkson. But whether it’s farming, fighting with councils, or tackling the great British pub trade, he’s doing it in the most Clarkson way possible: loudly, publicly, and with enough controversy to keep us all watching.
