Mumbai Indians Shine in High-Octane IPL 2025 Eliminator Against Gujarat Titans
What an electrifying night it was in Mullanpur! The Mumbai Indians, five-time IPL champions, once again proved why they’re a team built for pressure matches. In a high-stakes eliminator against the Gujarat Titans, MI pulled off a commanding 20-run victory, keeping their championship hopes alive and securing a spot in Qualifier 2 against Punjab Kings.
Batting first, Mumbai set the stage ablaze. Jonny Bairstow, making his debut for MI in the play-offs, showed his class right away. He smashed a quick-fire 47 off just 22 balls, laced with four boundaries and three towering sixes. Partnering with him was the ever-reliable Rohit Sharma. Rohit, who got lucky with two dropped chances, capitalized brilliantly, scoring a fluent 81 from 50 deliveries. His innings was the anchor Mumbai needed, featuring nine fours and four sixes in a masterclass of timing and power.

Despite losing Bairstow to a smart piece of fielding from Sai Sudharsan and Gerald Coetzee, the momentum didn’t drop. Suryakumar Yadav added a crucial 33, Tilak Varma chipped in with 25, and Hardik Pandya wrapped things up in style, finishing unbeaten on 22 from just eight balls, including three massive sixes in the final over. By the end of 20 overs, MI had posted an intimidating total of 228 for 5.
In response, Gujarat Titans showed resilience. Sai Sudharsan continued his dream season, scoring a brilliant 80, while Washington Sundar added 40 in a critical partnership of 84 runs. For a while, it seemed like GT had the upper hand. But cricket is a game of moments, and MI seized theirs. Jasprit Bumrah bowled a pinpoint yorker to dismiss Sundar, and then Richard Gleeson—on his debut—delivered the knockout blow by dismissing Sudharsan in the 16th over. Gleeson’s calm under pressure was remarkable; defending 24 in the final over, he gave away just three runs in the first three balls before limping off with cramp. Left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar took over and wrapped up the innings, leaving GT stranded at 208/6.
Gujarat’s woes were compounded by costly fielding errors. They dropped Rohit twice and also missed a chance to dismiss Suryakumar early. Captain Shubman Gill, who was dismissed in the very first over by Trent Boult for just 1, admitted after the match that those dropped catches made the difference.
Now, Mumbai Indians move forward with serious momentum and renewed confidence. Their next challenge? A high-stakes clash with Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2. One win there, and they’ll be booking a ticket to the IPL 2025 Final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
It’s do-or-die time, and Mumbai has just reminded everyone—they’re never out until the last ball is bowled.
