Simon Yates Conquers the Mountains to Seize Giro d’Italia Glory
What a day it was at the Giro d’Italia. Just when most had written off his chances, Simon Yates pulled off a sensational comeback on the penultimate stage, turning the general classification upside down and claiming what looks to be his second Grand Tour title. If you thought this race was wrapped up before the final mountain, you were wrong—and Yates made sure we all knew it.
into Stage 20, it seemed unlikely that anyone could dislodge the young Mexican rider, Isaac del Toro, who had been holding onto the pink jersey with a solid lead. Del Toro had 43 seconds on Richard Carapaz, and a sizable one minute and 21 seconds on Yates, who was sitting third overall. The odds weren’t in his favor. But this wasn’t just any stage—it featured the monstrous Colle delle Finestre, the same climb that crushed Yates’ dreams back in 2018. That year, he cracked spectacularly after wearing the leader's jersey for 13 days, watching helplessly as Chris Froome soared past.

But this time, Yates came back for revenge—and redemption.
On the brutal slopes of the Finestre, he launched a bold solo attack. It was a career-defining move. Not only did he overtake Del Toro and Carapaz, he absolutely blew past them, cresting the summit with a lead of one minute and 41 seconds over his nearest rivals. What followed was a tactically brilliant descent, as his teammate Wout van Aert—who had been up the road in the breakaway—linked up with him to drive the pace even harder over the final 30 kilometers.
By the time Yates crossed the line, he was nearly two minutes ahead of Chris Harper, who won the stage, and a whopping five minutes clear of Del Toro. He was in tears—understandably. This was more than a win. This was vindication. Seven years after heartbreak on the very same climb, he returned stronger, wiser, and absolutely fearless.
Now, with only the ceremonial stage in Rome left, the British rider is set to raise the coveted Trofeo Senza Fine. He’ll become only the third Brit ever to win the Giro, joining the likes of Chris Froome and Tao Geoghegan Hart.
What a moment. What a ride. Simon Yates didn’t just win a race—he rewrote his own story.
