Tragedy on Highway 70: Greyhound Crash Claims Lives, Injures Dozens
It was a heartbreaking scene on Memorial Day along Highway 70 in Madison County, Tennessee. A routine Greyhound bus trip from Memphis to Nashville turned catastrophic when tragedy struck. Around 6:20 p.m., a devastating crash occurred between the Greyhound bus and a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, leaving two people dead and at least 39 others injured.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s preliminary report, the crash caused the bus to veer off the road and into a ditch, while the pickup truck caught fire and came to a halt on the shoulder. The victims who tragically lost their lives have been identified as 56-year-old John Davis of Tennessee, the driver of the pickup truck, and 60-year-old Glen Young Jr. of Colorado, a passenger on the bus.

Emergency crews from multiple agencies, including MedCenter EMS and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, rushed to the chaotic scene. Thirty passengers were hospitalized—many of whom were international travelers. Among them were nine Irish and four English passengers, as well as a nine-year-old child from Texas. It’s still unclear whether all those injured were from the bus or if any were in other vehicles.
At the time of the crash, the Greyhound was being operated by a 30-year-old substitute driver from Mississippi. Greyhound confirmed that 36 people were aboard, including the driver and a relief driver. The company is now working with local authorities and continuing their internal investigation while offering assistance to those affected.
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the crash. It remains under investigation, and officials have urged the public to stay clear of the area while emergency responders complete their work.
This tragedy is a harsh reminder of how quickly lives can be turned upside down. A simple journey turned into a nightmare that left two families in mourning and dozens recovering from physical and emotional trauma. The pain felt by the loved ones of John Davis and Glen Young Jr. is unimaginable. And for those injured—especially the young and international passengers—the road to healing will likely be long.
As the investigation continues, our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and all who were affected by this devastating event.
