Tragedy on Hwy. 401: 3 Children Killed, Teen Driver Charged with Impaired Driving
It’s hard to even find the words for this one, but I want to take a moment to talk about something absolutely heartbreaking that happened right here in the GTA, and it’s been all over the news lately. Early Sunday morning, on May 18, a tragic collision on Highway 401 near the Renforth Drive off-ramp in Etobicoke claimed the lives of three innocent children. This wasn’t just another accident. This was something deeply disturbing and preventable—a devastating consequence of what police are calling impaired driving.
At around 12:30 a.m., a car carrying six people—two adults and four children—was stopped on the eastbound off-ramp when it was struck by another vehicle. That second vehicle, driven by a 19-year-old man, slammed into the stopped car. Two of the children died instantly at the scene, and a third was rushed to hospital, where they later died from their injuries. The fourth child and both adults were also taken to hospital, but thankfully, they’re in serious yet non-life-threatening condition.

Now here’s the gut-wrenching part: the driver of the vehicle that hit them was arrested on the spot and is now facing impaired driving-related charges. Nineteen years old. Just a teenager. His choices in that moment didn’t just change his life forever—they shattered a family. Multiple families, really. Lives lost. Futures stolen. And for what?
Police are still investigating, and Renforth Drive was closed off as the scene was combed for evidence. They're calling for witnesses to come forward, urging anyone with any information to reach out to Traffic Services.
As someone who drives on that highway often, this one really hits close to home. It’s a stark reminder that driving under the influence isn’t just illegal—it’s a lethal, selfish act that puts everyone at risk. Every time someone gets behind the wheel impaired, they're gambling with human lives, and this time, it cost three children everything.
It’s an unimaginable loss. And while there’s no way to undo what happened, maybe talking about it—sharing the reality of what reckless decisions can do—can help stop it from happening again. Hug your kids a little tighter tonight. And if you ever see someone about to drive impaired, speak up. It could save a life.
