Widespread Flight Disruptions Hit YVR After Runway Closure

Hey everyone, just wanted to share a quick but important update if you're planning to fly in or out of Vancouver International Airport—YVR—right now. It’s been a rough travel day as unexpected flight delays and cancellations are rippling through the airport following a temporary runway closure.

So here's what happened: crews working on overnight paving for YVR's north runway ran into an unforeseen equipment failure with their asphalt supplier. Because of that, they couldn’t finish the job on time, which meant the runway couldn’t reopen as scheduled this morning. As a result, flight schedules were thrown off balance, and now we’re seeing significant disruptions.

According to the latest information, 24 departing flights have been delayed, and nine have been cancelled. On the arrivals side, it’s even worse—over 65 delays and 10 cancellations. It’s a pretty chaotic situation, and the airport hasn’t publicly stated the exact reason for each delay or cancellation, but the runway issue and resulting traffic restrictions are clearly playing a major role.

Nav Canada, the agency responsible for air navigation, has put a temporary Traffic Management Initiative in place to keep everything running as safely and smoothly as possible, though there’s no denying it’s having a huge impact.

If you’re flying with Air Canada, there’s a bit of good news: they’re allowing free changes for flights to and from Vancouver today, May 30th, provided there’s availability. That said, they’re not extending the same flexibility through the weekend—at least not yet—so definitely keep checking their site for updates if you’re flying Saturday or Sunday. Also, they’ve made it clear that passengers should verify their flight status before heading to the airport.

WestJet originally wasn’t offering change waivers, but they’ve since come around. Now, they’re also allowing one-time free changes or cancellations for May 30th and 31st, citing the importance of shared accountability across Canada’s air travel infrastructure.

Flair Airlines is also affected. They’re urging passengers to check their flight status regularly due to significant air traffic control delays. Flair notes that the air traffic control team at YVR is still understaffed, which adds another layer of difficulty on top of the runway closure. The airline reminds customers about their On-Time Guarantee—so if your delay goes beyond 60 minutes, you may be eligible for some compensation.

As for Porter Airlines, they’re mostly operating on time and haven’t offered any special accommodations. But even they had a couple of delays today, so again, check before you go.

All of this is a pretty strong reminder that air travel is super interconnected—when one part of the system stumbles, the domino effect is real. If you or someone you know has travel plans involving Vancouver right now, check flight statuses early and often, and stay connected with your airline for the latest options.

Safe travels out there.
