Antoine Massey Captured: Ninth Inmate Found After Daring New Orleans Jailbreak

It’s a story that feels ripped from a crime drama—but it’s very real and it’s unfolding in New Orleans. Antoine Massey, a 33-year-old repeat escapee with a long record and an even longer list of charges, has finally been recaptured after spending over six weeks on the run. He was the ninth of ten inmates who pulled off a bold and shocking escape from the Orleans Justice Center just after midnight on May 16. With his capture, only one fugitive—convicted double murderer Derrick Groves—remains at large.

Authorities located Massey in a short-term rental property in the Hollygrove neighborhood, barely three miles from the very jail he escaped. After receiving a tip around mid-morning on June 27, U.S. Marshals moved swiftly, surrounding the house on Stroelitz Street. By 3:30 PM, Massey surrendered peacefully without resistance. According to law enforcement, the operation was the result of both community cooperation and detailed detective work.

What makes this escape even more unbelievable is the method: the inmates reportedly used electric hair clippers and multiple blades to saw through cell walls, exploited faulty locks, and slipped past guards with the help of stolen bedsheets. Massey, already known for past escape attempts—including one back in 2007 as a juvenile—was recently facing charges related to domestic abuse and vehicle theft.

There’s also a social media twist. Earlier this month, a man claiming to be Massey appeared in a video pleading innocence and even appealing to rapper Lil Wayne for support, waving what he said was a signed affidavit from his ex-girlfriend recanting allegations. Authorities say that woman, Diamond White, was later arrested for helping Massey following his escape.

Officials now believe Massey had considerable help while evading capture. Whether it was through assistance with the Airbnb, transportation, or hiding in plain sight, details are still under investigation. “It’s obvious someone helped him,” said State Police Superintendent Col. Robert Hodges. But thanks to a solid tip and effective collaboration among local, state, and federal authorities, Massey is back in custody.

Now, all eyes are on Derrick Groves—the final escapee still on the run. Groves is considered dangerous, having been convicted of killing two people with AK-style rifles at a Mardi Gras event in 2018. Law enforcement has warned that it’s only a matter of time before he, too, is caught. There’s currently a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

As New Orleans breathes a small sigh of relief with Massey's arrest, the search for Groves continues. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward. In the words of Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Walter Martin, “Just like we found Mr. Massey, we will find Mr. Groves. It’s not a matter of if—just when.”
