Arsenal in Crisis? Thomas Partey Nearing Exit Amid Contract Standoff
It looks like Arsenal might be on the verge of losing one of their most influential midfielders — Thomas Partey. As of now, contract renewal talks between the Ghanaian international and the club have reportedly hit a dead end. This is not the kind of news Arsenal fans were hoping for as the summer transfer window heats up.
Partey had what could arguably be described as his best and most consistent season yet in an Arsenal shirt. He featured in 52 games across all competitions, which is a significant achievement given his earlier injury struggles since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2020. His performance was so impactful that he even picked up the Male Player of the Year award at the 2025 Ghana Football Awards. It’s safe to say he finally delivered the kind of reliability Arsenal were hoping for when they signed him.
Now, here’s where things get complicated. Despite his form and importance to Mikel Arteta’s system, the club and Partey’s camp can’t seem to find common ground on a new contract. Arsenal are offering the same salary package — reported to be around £200,000 a week — while Partey is asking for a raise. At 32, it’s understandable that he’s looking for one last big contract, but Arsenal are holding firm.

And as these negotiations stall, other clubs are circling. It’s been reported that both Fenerbahce, managed by José Mourinho, and AC Milan under Max Allegri, have already made contact and possibly submitted offers. Barcelona have also shown interest, with Hansi Flick reportedly identifying Partey as a key midfield target. The competition is heating up, and Arsenal don’t have much time left — his contract expires on June 30th.
The irony in all this? Arsenal hadn’t even planned to keep Partey initially. But with Jorginho now gone and Martin Zubimendi’s arrival still pending, the urgency to retain Partey has grown. Arteta is known to be a strong supporter of the Ghanaian, even describing this past season as his “most consistent” and calling him a crucial part of the squad’s midfield.
Right now, it feels like there’s a 50/50 chance he stays. Arsenal want him, Arteta needs him, but unless they match his salary expectations, he’ll walk. And it won’t be for lack of options. Partey’s stock is high again, and top-tier European clubs are already laying the groundwork for a move.
If Arsenal do let him go, they’ll need to act quickly in finding a replacement who can match Partey’s blend of power, positional sense, and tactical flexibility. With title aspirations still in sight, losing a player like him for nothing could be a major setback — not just in terms of quality, but also squad depth and stability.
This situation is unfolding fast, and unless something changes dramatically, we could be witnessing the end of Thomas Partey’s time in north London.
