Bryce Cartwright Bids Farewell to NRL, Begins New Chapter at St Marys
Well, in a move that’s caught plenty of fans off guard, Bryce Cartwright has officially parted ways with the Parramatta Eels — and the departure is effective immediately. That’s right, the veteran forward, who’s been part of the blue and gold since 2021, won’t be donning the Eels jersey again. Instead, he’s making a heartfelt return to his junior club, the St Marys Saints, where he’s expected to wrap up his playing career.
Now, this might come as a surprise, especially considering Cartwright’s contribution over the past few seasons. He notched up 44 appearances across 2022 and 2023 and became a fairly regular fixture in the Eels’ lineup. But under the new coaching regime led by Jason Ryles, things just didn’t seem to click. Bryce has yet to appear in first grade this season, and it’s clear the writing was on the wall.

In his own words, Cartwright expressed deep gratitude for his time at the Eels, calling it “a home away from home.” He thanked the club, his teammates, and especially the fans who supported him through thick and thin. “This decision is about making the best choice for my family and our future,” he said. You can really sense that this isn’t just a career move—it’s a life decision, one made with maturity and heart.
Eels' Director of Football, Mark O’Neill, also praised Cartwright for his character, highlighting not only his consistent performances over the past couple of years but also his strong family values and professionalism. That’s a nice touch and shows the mutual respect in this parting.
Let’s not forget, Cartwright’s been in the game for a while—since his NRL debut back in 2014 with the Penrith Panthers. He later had a stint with the Gold Coast Titans before finding a second wind at Parramatta. Across his career, he played 185 top-grade matches, showcasing his versatility and work ethic as an edge forward.
With this move to the Ron Massey Cup and back to St Marys, it really feels like Cartwright is closing the book on his professional NRL journey the same way he started it—at home. It’s a full-circle moment, and while fans might be sad to see him leave the top tier, there's something poetic about finishing where it all began.
Bryce Cartwright leaves behind a legacy of resilience, passion, and grit. He may not have been the flashiest name in the league, but he always gave his all. Best of luck to him as he takes this next step.
