Cherry Tree Pub Alarm Torments Colchester Residents for Days
Imagine trying to enjoy a warm, peaceful weekend—maybe reading in your garden, windows open to let in a breeze—and all you can hear is an endless fire alarm shrieking through the air. That’s the exact nightmare residents around the Cherry Tree Pub in Colchester had to endure recently. This wasn’t just a few hours of disturbance; the alarm blared on for four relentless days. And it wasn’t even a functioning pub—it’s been shut down and boarded up since November.
People living nearby, particularly in Nathan Court which sits just behind the pub, were the worst hit. One resident shared how the alarm started on a Thursday and didn’t stop until the following Monday. They said, “I suffer from migraines, and the noise kept me up all night. It was unbearable.” Imagine trying to sleep, work, or simply relax while that kind of piercing sound echoes across your home day and night.

Another local, clearly frustrated, explained how they had to be the one to contact the alarm company. The team finally came out Sunday night and traced the issue back to a tripped fire alarm system. Until then, it was non-stop. Even simple pleasures like reading in the garden were impossible, and with the current heatwave, residents couldn’t even open their windows at night without inviting in the noise.
Councillor Dave Harris didn’t mince words either. He said this situation showed a total lack of consideration for the local community. “Several people reached out to me because they couldn’t sleep. I sent three emails trying to get this sorted, and the response was extremely disappointing. Environmental health directed me to contact the owners, but nobody showed up to fix it until days later.”
The Cherry Tree Pub has been a concern even before this. After its closure, locals and Berechurch councillors like Harris and Martyn Warnes voiced worries about its future and how abandoned spaces can quickly become sources of problems. The owners have yet to respond publicly about the incident.
Four days of noise pollution, stress, and sleeplessness—all caused by a neglected building’s faulty alarm system. It’s a reminder of how quickly small oversights can snowball into community-wide issues when no one takes responsibility. And in Colchester, the echoes of that alarm are still ringing in people’s memories.
