Don Antonio Sbardella: 60 Years of Faithful Service and Spiritual Legacy

Today, I want to take a few minutes to talk about someone who represents the very heart of a community—a man whose life and vocation have touched generations: Don Antonio Sbardella. This past Saturday, June 28th, in the majestic setting of the Cathedral of Sant’Agapito Martire in Palestrina, Don Antonio celebrated a remarkable milestone—his 60th anniversary of priestly ordination. Sixty years. Just imagine the depth of dedication, sacrifice, and love that span over six decades of service to God and to others.

When you say “Don Antonio” in Palestrina or Genazzano, you’re not just saying the name of a priest. You’re invoking a symbol. A presence. A trusted guide. Someone who has been there in moments of joy—baptisms, weddings, first communions—and someone who has stood by us in sorrow, during funerals, in times of illness, or when life simply weighed too heavily. In his steady voice and warm eyes, many have found comfort, direction, and peace.

Don Antonio has been more than a priest. He’s been a cornerstone of spiritual life in his community. From his role as Canon of the Cathedral, to serving as parish priest at Gesù Redentore and later in Genazzano, his tireless work has been a beacon for thousands. People still remember him from the '70s as the priest who connected deeply with young people, who guided them not only in faith but in life. “Zio Don Antonio,” as he came to be affectionately known, created bonds that time could not fade.

At the celebration on Saturday, there was a palpable sense of gratitude in the air. Don Antonio, ever humble, simply said, “It is beautiful to give thanks to the Lord.” He acknowledged the joys, the struggles, and the grace that have marked his journey. And he reminded us all that no matter where we are in life, there’s always something for which to give thanks.

He asked us to keep him in our prayers—and how could we not? For all the times he has prayed for us, blessed us, and stood beside us, this is the least we can do. Because Don Antonio isn’t just a part of Palestrina's history—he’s a living part of its soul.

So here's to you, Don Antonio. Thank you for walking with us, guiding us, inspiring us, and reminding us that faith isn’t just about rituals—it’s about love, service, and community. May God continue to bless you as you have blessed so many.
