Glen Gulutzan Set to Return as Dallas Stars Head Coach

Well, hockey fans, it looks like the Dallas Stars are turning back the clock — Glen Gulutzan is poised to make his return to Big D, this time with some unfinished business to settle. According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Stars have officially offered the head coaching position to Gulutzan, and although contract negotiations are still ongoing, it's expected to be finalized soon.

This is a fascinating development, especially considering the trajectory of Gulutzan’s coaching career. For those who remember, this wouldn’t be his first rodeo in Dallas. He originally stepped in as the Stars’ head coach back in 2011. During that two-season stint, the team posted a decent 64-57-9 record, but ultimately failed to make the playoffs. After that, the franchise moved on, and Gulutzan went back to work behind the bench elsewhere.

But the story doesn’t end there. He kept building his resume — first as an assistant with the Vancouver Canucks, then stepping back into a head coaching role with the Calgary Flames in 2016. That tenure had its ups and downs. He led the Flames to the playoffs in his first season but was let go after missing the postseason the next year. From there, he joined the Edmonton Oilers' coaching staff, and that’s where he's been grinding for the past seven years.

And here's the twist — it’s the Oilers who knocked the Stars out of the playoffs the past two seasons. So it’s safe to say Gulutzan has had a front-row seat to what Dallas has been doing right… and wrong. Now, with Peter DeBoer out after three straight playoff exits in the Western Conference Final, it’s Gulutzan’s shot at redemption.

For Stars GM Jim Nill, this is more than just a coaching hire — it’s a calculated bet. Gulutzan is a familiar face, but he’s coming back with years of added experience, perspective, and lessons learned. It’s a full-circle moment, really. And with the roster Dallas has built, the expectations are sky-high. Can Gulutzan push them over that playoff hump? That remains to be seen.

But one thing’s for sure — he’s not just coming back to fill a vacancy. He’s coming back to prove that the second time can be the charm.
