Graz in Shock: Tragedy Strikes BORG School with Deadly Shooting

What happened today in Graz is truly beyond comprehension. It's one of those days that leaves a scar not only on a city but on an entire country. Early this Tuesday morning, just before 10 AM, chaos erupted at the BORG Dreierschützengasse in the district of Lend. A former student, only 22 years old, entered the school building armed with a pistol and a shotgun. What followed was a devastating rampage that has now claimed the lives of at least ten people—including the perpetrator himself—and left many others seriously injured.

This wasn’t just another crime statistic. This was a targeted attack, reportedly carried out by someone who had once sat in those same classrooms. The suspect was said to have viewed himself as a victim of bullying during his school years. That pain, whether internalized or never properly addressed, seemed to boil over into an unthinkable act of violence. He is believed to have moved between two classrooms, opening fire with terrifying intent. The suspect was later found dead, apparently by suicide, inside a school restroom.

By midday, the area was completely cordoned off. The entire neighborhood was asked to stay clear while emergency services, including police special forces and the Red Cross, worked tirelessly to secure the scene and provide medical and psychological assistance. Around 160 Red Cross personnel with 65 vehicles were deployed, and crisis centers were quickly set up in locations like the Helmut-List-Halle and ASKÖ-Stadion in Eggenberg to support the many traumatized students, staff, and their families.

Among the victims were mostly students, but also at least one adult. Dozens were injured—some critically—and are currently being treated in various hospitals around Graz. The scale of the tragedy is such that the number of deaths could potentially rise. The entire nation is shaken.

The reaction has been swift and deeply emotional. Graz’s Mayor Elke Kahr called it a “terrible tragedy” and emphasized that while schools may reopen in the coming days, education must take a backseat to healing. Landeshauptmann Mario Kunasek shared his deep sorrow and ensured the public that officials are doing everything possible to investigate and support those affected. Even national political events have been put on hold in light of what happened.
