Harrington, Cink, and Hensby Set Stage for Dramatic Weekend at U.S. Senior Open
If you're a golf fan, the 2025 U.S. Senior Open is delivering the kind of drama you'd hope for heading into the weekend. Right now, all eyes are on the compelling trio of Padraig Harrington, Stewart Cink, and Mark Hensby — all of whom are tied at the top heading into Saturday's action at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.
Watching Harrington and Cink navigate this tough, high-altitude course together has been something special. They’ve played side-by-side for two straight days now and clearly feed off each other's energy. Cink clawed his way back on Friday, making up five strokes on the final nine to match Harrington’s pace. Both sit at 6-under 134, and they’ll share the final tee time going into the weekend. It’s the kind of pairing that’s both competitive and comfortable — these two know each other's games, respect each other deeply, and even share a knack for launching bombs off the tee, both averaging over 300 yards.

And then there’s Mark Hensby, who’s been quietly turning heads with his relentless birdie streak — 14 so far, including a clutch 20-footer on the par-3 eighth Friday. He followed that up with a solid birdie on the par-5 ninth, the easiest hole on the course, to join the tie for first.
Cink, meanwhile, was a machine from tee to green, hitting all 18 greens in regulation on Friday. But even he admitted, that stat doesn’t tell the whole story. At Broadmoor, the real battle begins on the greens. They’re tough to read, shaped by the slopes of Cheyenne Mountain looming in the background, and they don’t forgive even the slightest error in judgment.
Harrington had his moments, too. After storming the back nine with a 31 and holding a five-shot lead at one point, a couple of three-putt bogeys reminded us how quickly things can shift here. Still, the Irishman closed strong with a spectacular birdie from a bunker on the ninth, thanks in part to reading the line off Cink’s putt. It was a small stroke of fortune that kept him in the hunt.
This is vintage senior golf at its best — decorated veterans going head-to-head with major championship credentials and a deep desire to add another big title to their résumés. Harrington, the 2022 Senior Open champ and three-time major winner, wants to reclaim glory. Cink, the 2009 British Open champ, is looking to make a statement in his Senior Open debut. And Hensby? He’s the wildcard with something to prove.
While some big names like Bernhard Langer and Angel Cabrera didn’t make the cut, the spotlight is right where it should be — on three fierce competitors with very different stories, but the same goal. With tough greens, high altitude, and unpredictable bounces still to come, the weekend is shaping up to be unforgettable. Don’t blink — anything can happen.
