Honouring the Dreaming: NAIDOC Week 2025 Celebrates the Next Generation

Hey everyone, I want to take a moment to share something truly meaningful happening this July— NAIDOC Week 2025 . It’s not just a date on the calendar, it’s a time where we pause, reflect, and genuinely connect with the heart of this country—its First Nations peoples, their cultures, their stories, and their future.

This year’s theme, “Next Generation Dreaming” , holds powerful weight. It’s a call for all Australians to come together and support the voices and dreams of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people—the next generation of storytellers, knowledge-holders, and leaders. It’s about recognising that the Dreaming isn’t a distant past—it’s alive, evolving, and carried forward by our youth.

Cumberland City Council is doing something really special to honour this. On Wednesday, 9 July , from 11am to 2pm , they’re hosting a free, family-friendly event at Central Gardens Nature Reserve in Merrylands West. It’s an open invitation to everyone—families, friends, neighbours—to come together and celebrate culture, unity, and future vision.

The event will be packed with cultural experiences—storytelling, live performances, bead-making, bubble soccer for the kids, sculpture painting, and one of my personal favourites: a yarning circle. It’s more than entertainment—it’s about engaging meaningfully with Aboriginal culture in ways that are accessible and deeply enriching.

Mayor Ola Hamed summed it up beautifully. She said NAIDOC Week is a time to walk alongside First Nations communities in solidarity and respect. The fact that this year also marks 50 years of NAIDOC Week makes it even more significant. That’s half a century of recognising the resilience, strength, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across the nation.

What really stands out to me is the emphasis on youth this year. Events like these aren’t just celebrations—they’re investments in cultural continuity. They’re an invitation to listen to young voices, to learn their perspectives, and to make space for them to thrive. Whether it's through language, art, dance, or leadership—our support today helps preserve traditions and shape a more inclusive future.

So if you’re in or around Cumberland on July 9, make the time to be there. And if you're elsewhere, find a NAIDOC event near you. Show up. Listen. Learn. Because this isn’t just about history—it’s about now, and it’s about what comes next.

NAIDOC Week isn’t just a celebration. It’s a movement—one that’s growing stronger with every generation.
