Jake Turpin Slammed for Reckless High Shot Amid Bulldogs' Narrow Victory

Last night’s clash between the Canterbury Bulldogs and South Sydney Rabbitohs brought not only high drama on the scoreboard but also a fair share of controversy—and at the centre of it was Bulldogs hooker Jake Turpin. With only one previous appearance this season, Turpin’s impact off the bench in Round 15 was supposed to inject energy. Instead, it ignited criticism, particularly after a reckless high tackle on Tyrone Munro that saw him sin binned in the second half.

The incident happened just as the Bulldogs seemed to have control of the game, leading 22-10. Turpin charged in with full force, catching Munro high and late. The tackle was anything but subtle, prompting NRL legend Andrew Johns to call it “reckless,” and noting the sheer speed and poor targeting of the hit. “He went in a million miles an hour and needed to lower his target,” Johns commented during Nine’s broadcast.

Brad Fittler didn’t hold back either. He criticised Turpin’s overall approach, suggesting a major attitude adjustment is overdue. “He needs to change his attitude,” Fittler said, citing not only the hit on Munro but also earlier incidents involving Jai Arrow and Tallis Duncan. “Someone sitting on the bench and looking for an opportunity with the team virtually sitting on top of the ladder—you’d think he’d show more discipline.”

And Fittler has a point. Turpin is 28 now, no longer a fringe rookie with time to iron out his game. After playing just four matches last year and one earlier this season, this was a chance to prove he belongs in the Bulldogs’ top squad. Instead, he nearly cost them the win. In the ten minutes Turpin was off, Souths capitalised with two tries—Jack Wighton crossed first, and then Munro scored in the 78th minute to set up a nail-biting finish.
