Julie Bowen’s Hilarious Shock Over Being inHappy Gilmore 2
So, guess what’s hitting Netflix this July? That’s right — Happy Gilmore 2 is officially happening! And while fans of the original are losing their minds, no one seems more surprised than Julie Bowen herself. You remember her, right? She played Virginia Venit, Happy’s love interest in the 1996 classic. Well, when she heard about the sequel, her first reaction was basically, “Oh, I’m definitely not going to be in it.”
In a recent interview, Bowen admitted she figured Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore would have moved on to a new flame by now — maybe someone younger, flashier. She even joked that he’d probably be with “some little bitty on the side, like a cart girl.” And to make things funnier, her own kids beat the news to her, saying they heard a rumor that Sydney Sweeney had taken her place. I mean, even Julie thought it made sense! She said she felt a little hurt, but still totally respected that casting idea. “Of course, why wouldn’t you go with Sydney Sweeney?” she laughed. “I get it.”

But then, surprise! Julie got the call. She was actually in the movie. And she couldn’t believe it. Her reaction? “Are you sure? Come on.” That kind of honesty just makes her so likable.
And Bowen isn’t the only familiar face returning. Christopher McDonald is back as Shooter McGavin, Ben Stiller reprises his role as the snarky orderly Hal, and Adam Sandler’s own daughter, Sunny Sandler, joins the cast as Happy’s daughter — for whom he’s now trying to raise tuition money via another wild golf comeback.
The cast is absolutely stacked this time around. We’re talking cameos from Bad Bunny (as Gilmore’s new caddie!), Eminem, Post Malone, Travis Kelce, and even Margaret Qualley. Bowen, who admits she’s a massive Bad Bunny fan, had a bit of a fangirl moment on set. “I couldn’t even look him in the eye,” she confessed, “I had to walk away — and then circle back later like a weirdo.”
With all this talent, nostalgic throwbacks, and Adam Sandler doing what he does best, Happy Gilmore 2 is shaping up to be a total crowd-pleaser. It’s funny, a bit heartwarming, and jam-packed with enough star power to light up the leaderboard. And yeah, it’s been nearly 30 years — but if the trailer is any indication, Happy hasn’t lost his swing.
Mark your calendars — July 25th on Netflix. It's game time!
