Juneteenth 2025 at IAAM: A Celebration of Freedom, Culture, and Community
Let me tell you about something truly powerful happening this month. The International African American Museum in Charleston is gearing up for its annual Juneteenth on the Yard celebration—also known as J.O.Y.—and it’s shaping up to be a day full of meaning, music, and unity. This isn't just another festival; it’s a multigenerational experience designed to honor Black freedom, joy, and history, all set against the backdrop of the museum's African Ancestors Memorial Garden.
Every year, this event draws people together from all walks of life to reflect, celebrate, and connect through African American culture. What makes J.O.Y. stand out is how it blends remembrance with expression. It’s a space where we can look back at the struggles and triumphs of the past while lifting up the brilliance and resilience that define the African American story.

As IAAM’s Public Historian Brandon Reid put it, “Juneteenth is a moment of remembrance and celebration — a chance to honor the resilience, resistance, and boundless creativity that define the African American story.” That statement really resonates. Because when we talk about freedom, we’re not just talking about history—we’re talking about expression, creativity, and the beauty of becoming.
On June 19th, from noon to 5 p.m., the African Ancestors Memorial Garden will come alive. There’ll be live performances, interactive zones, and community spaces all meant to engage, educate, and uplift. From the Ubuntu Village to the Adorned Black Beauty Bazaar and a full mainstage production, the lineup is rich.
Headlining the event is Grammy-nominated artist Mumu Fresh, known for her fierce vocals and cultural impact. She’ll be joined by Charleston’s own Wona Womalan, a group preserving the rhythms of West African drumming and dance; Jordan Maria, an expressive movement artist; The Mahoganee Xperience, blending Gullah Geechee roots with music and storytelling; and Riecy G, the dynamic voice of Z93 Jamz. Deejay Rubin will keep the energy high with his signature genre-mixing sets, starting right at noon.
And here’s something even more special: admission to the museum is free that day. Visitors are encouraged to register in advance for timed entry tickets via the IAAM website. So it’s not just a celebration—it’s an opportunity for learning, connecting, and honoring those who came before us.
If you're in Charleston—or even if you're not and can make the trip—Juneteenth on the Yard is absolutely worth your time. It’s where culture, joy, and remembrance meet, and where community is truly celebrated.
