Lee County Traffic Plans: Your Voice Matters for a Better Future
Have you ever felt like the roads in Lee County, Florida are becoming more congested by the day? Like you’re stuck in a never-ending loop of brake lights, honking horns, and frustration? Well, now is your chance to actually do something about it. The Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is holding a public hearing that could shape the very roads we drive on for the next five years and beyond.
On June 20, 2025, at 9 a.m. , at the Lee County Administration East Building (2201 Second Street, Room 118, Fort Myers), the MPO is inviting residents, commuters, business owners, and anyone impacted by local traffic to attend a public meeting. And this isn’t just another government formality — this is a key opportunity for us to have a say in the transportation priorities for our region.
The main focus of the hearing will be the adoption of the FY 2025/2026 to FY 2029/2030 Transportation Improvement Program . This is a multi-year roadmap for where federal and state funding will go — everything from road construction and widening, to traffic signal updates and safety enhancements. It’s a blueprint that impacts how we move, where we get stuck, and how safe our streets are.

In addition to this plan, the board will also review updated project priority lists , both for traditional roadway work and for multi-modal improvements . That includes funding for bicycle lanes, pedestrian routes, and public transit upgrades . There's even an item on the agenda from the City of Sanibel , requesting $160,000 to study a proposed roundabout at Causeway Boulevard and Periwinkle Way — a project that could improve traffic flow at a known trouble spot.
Beyond the lists and plans, the meeting will also feature important presentations — like the I-75 widening project between Golden Gate Parkway and Corkscrew Road, and a study into expanding the Daniels Parkway Rest Area .
If you want your thoughts to be included but can’t make it in person, you can still submit comments. Send them via email to dscott@leempo.com , fax them to (239)-790-2695 , or mail them to P.O. Box 150045, Cape Coral, FL 33915-0045 . As long as your feedback is received by 5 p.m. on June 19 , it will be shared with the board before the vote.
Want to take it a step further? You can also participate in a Long Range Transportation Plan survey that will help guide how Lee County tackles traffic for decades to come. It’s quick, taking just 5-10 minutes, and is available in both English and Spanish.
The bottom line is this: traffic doesn’t get better on its own. If we want real solutions, we need to show up, speak out, and support smart planning. This June 20 hearing is one of the most direct ways to influence how Lee County grows — and how we all get from point A to point B.
