Luke Hodge Laughs Off Emergency Room Trip After Social Basketball Injury

So, here's a bit of a story that proves even sporting legends aren't immune to a bit of weekend warrior chaos — Luke Hodge, yes, that Luke Hodge — the dual Norm Smith Medallist and Hawthorn AFL champion — ended up spending a night in the emergency room after what was supposed to be a casual game of social basketball.

It all happened when Hodge, now retired and recently inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame, caught a stray elbow to the forehead during a friendly match. That innocent layup attempt turned into an ER visit, with Hodge needing stitches for a decent-sized gash right in the middle of his forehead. The whole thing was put on full display when he rocked up to The Agenda Setters panel show with a fresh wound on display — and naturally, the jokes were flying before the first topic was even introduced.

Kane Cornes, the show’s host, wasted no time digging in with a cheeky intro: “...and Luke Hodge, the dual Norm Smith medallist, Hawthorn champion, and a man with a fresh gash on his forehead — what has happened, Luke?”

Hodge, always the good sport, took it in stride. He chuckled, “Ah, it’s old-man basketball, Kane. I went up for a layup and copped a nice little elbow right in the forehead. Spent the night in emergency.”

This isn’t his first brush with trouble on the basketball court either. Just a few months back, he tore his hamstring during another social game — while training for a marathon, no less. It seems his competitive fire hasn’t cooled one bit post-retirement.

Even his co-hosts couldn’t resist having a dig. Dale Thomas and Caroline Wilson joked that an intervention might be in order, with Wilson cheekily suggesting it might need to come from Hodge’s own household. Turns out, she wasn’t wrong. Hodge admitted his family gave him a dose of reality the second he walked in the door, with the first words being, “Do you reckon you should give up on sport?”

Despite all this, Hodge remains undeterred. After the hamstring incident, he shared on social media that he was turning to Pilates to get himself marathon-ready and “bullet-proof” his body. Now, after this latest mishap, you’d think he might back off. But if we’ve learned anything about Luke Hodge, it’s that he doesn’t exactly do things by halves — even in social basketball.

It’s classic Hodge — fearless on the AFL field, and apparently just as committed off it, even if it means a trip to the ER now and again.
