Matildas Set to Light Up WA as Sam Kerr Makes Surprise Return
As excitement builds across Western Australia, the CommBank Matildas are officially back on home soil — and there’s even more reason for local fans to celebrate. In a surprise twist that’s already making waves, hometown hero Sam Kerr has returned to Perth to join the national team camp. While she won’t be playing, her presence alone has sent a buzz through the football community.
The Matildas are in Perth for an international friendly series against Slovenia and Panama, part of the June-July FIFA Women's International Window. The first of four matches kicks off on Thursday, 26 June at HBF Park, where the Aussies will face Slovenia under the lights. Then again on Sunday, 29 June, the two teams will clash in what promises to be another high-energy contest. After that, the action moves south, with the Matildas taking on Panama in Bunbury on 5 July, before returning to Perth for a final match on 8 July.

Before the matches begin, fans are getting a rare treat — an Open Training Session at the Sam Kerr Football Centre on Tuesday, 1 July. It’s free, open to the public, and no tickets are required. Gates open at 3:00pm AWST, and the session kicks off at 3:50pm, running for about an hour. It’s a golden chance to watch your favourite stars up close, soak in the atmosphere, and maybe catch a glimpse of Kerr doing light training drills as she continues her ACL rehab.
Kerr, who hasn't played since her injury in January last year, is still deep in her return-to-play program. Though not part of the official 33-player squad, her appearance at the camp is being closely coordinated with her club Chelsea, ensuring she’s on track for a full return. Her recent posts from the Sam Kerr Football Centre — the facility that bears her name — show just how much being back in Perth means to her.
Newly appointed head coach Joe Montemurro is overseeing his first matches in charge, and there’s a strong sense of optimism in the air. The squad may be missing a few familiar faces due to injuries and personal reasons, but the depth of talent remains impressive, with young and experienced players alike hungry to impress.
For fans in WA, it’s a special moment. Not only do they get to see their national team in action across multiple cities, but they also get to welcome back Sam Kerr, even if she’s only observing from the sidelines for now. Whether you're heading to HBF Park or planning a trip to Bunbury, one thing’s certain — the Matildas are here, and they're ready to put on a show.
