Medvedev Masterclass Sends Zverev Packing Again in Halle Thriller

Let’s talk about something truly electrifying from the tennis world — Daniil Medvedev is back at it again, and this time he’s sent a strong message just before Wimbledon. In a dramatic and high-quality match at the Halle Open in Germany, Medvedev took down local favorite Alexander Zverev in a three-set battle that showed why the Russian is always a major contender on grass.

The match ended with Medvedev winning 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, and what a ride it was. The first set was tight, with both players holding serve, but Medvedev edged ahead with a dominant performance in the tiebreak. Despite not converting his only break point in the set, he stayed focused and dictated the pace.

In the second set, things got even tenser. Medvedev went up 2-0 early on, seemingly in full control, but Zverev, backed by the home crowd and desperate to turn things around, came storming back. Even after dealing with illness in his quarterfinal match, Zverev found the energy to dominate the second set tiebreak, crushing it 7-1.

But here’s the thing about Medvedev: he doesn’t rattle easily. In the final set, he broke Zverev early again, going up 2-1, and this time, he held his nerve. Despite facing pressure and break points, he stood firm, returning fire with precision and playing smart, measured tennis. He missed two match points in the second set but didn’t let it haunt him. Instead, he closed it out like a true pro.

Now, he’s into the Halle final where he’ll face Alexander Bublik, who shocked everyone by knocking out world No.1 Jannik Sinner earlier in the tournament. Bublik is the defending champion and showed he’s in great form by hitting 18 aces in his semifinal against Karen Khachanov.

For Zverev, this loss adds to a season that has felt like one step forward, two steps back. He’s won only one title this year (in Munich) and has faltered in the biggest moments, including a heartbreaking loss in the Australian Open final and an underwhelming exit in the French Open quarterfinals.

As Wimbledon approaches — kicking off June 30 — the momentum clearly belongs to Medvedev. The 2021 US Open champ has already made two semifinal runs at Wimbledon in past years, and this win in Halle shows he’s once again ready to challenge for major silverware.

One thing is for sure: Daniil Medvedev is peaking at just the right time.
