Lipari Foods, based in Warren, Michigan, has issued an urgent recall of its JLM Branded Dark Chocolate Nonpareils. These candies, sold in 14oz clear plastic containers, were distributed across retail stores all over the U.S. What’s the issue? They may contain undeclared milk —which was not listed on the label. This means people who are allergic to milk could unknowingly consume it and suffer severe or even life-threatening reactions.
Let’s break this down. While many people associate milk allergies with mild discomfort, it’s actually a serious health issue for millions of Americans. Approximately 6.6 million people in the U.S. are allergic to milk. For them, ingesting even a small amount of dairy can lead to symptoms like hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, or even anaphylaxis—a potentially fatal allergic reaction that can strike within minutes. The only way to counter that is with immediate use of an EpiPen or another form of epinephrine.
To make matters worse, a larger group—30 to 50 million Americans—are lactose intolerant. While that’s not an allergy, it still causes symptoms like bloating, cramps, nausea, and diarrhea. For both groups, this undeclared milk poses a serious risk.
The recall affects products with these specific lot numbers: 28202501A, 29202501A, 23202504A, 14202505A, 15202505A, and 03202506A. You’ll find these printed on the bottom label of the package. If you or someone in your household bought these, the advice is clear: don’t take any chances. Either throw them out immediately or return them to where you bought them.
Fortunately, as of now, there have been no reported illnesses. But this isn’t something to brush off. Mistakes in food labeling can be catastrophic. One bite of the wrong product can turn a normal day into a medical emergency.
So, please spread the word. Check your cupboards. And if you know someone with a dairy allergy or lactose intolerance, make sure they’re aware. Food recalls are more than just news—they’re potentially life-saving alerts.
