Nicholas Pooran Bids Farewell to International Cricket Before Aussie Tour
So, here's some big news from the world of cricket—one that's tugging at the heartstrings of West Indies fans around the globe. Nicholas Pooran, the dynamic left-handed wicketkeeper-batter and a stalwart of West Indies' T20 squad, has announced his retirement from international cricket. Yes, you heard that right. The man who has thrilled us with his aggressive stroke play and charisma on the field has decided to step away from the maroon jersey before Australia's upcoming tour of the Caribbean.
Pooran’s announcement comes as a bit of a shock, especially with the Aussies set to play three Tests and a five-match T20 series this month. At just 29, it feels like he still had more to give. But after over 100 T20 internationals—106 to be exact—where he racked up 2275 runs at an average of 26.14, he’s decided it’s time to move on. In ODIs, he featured 61 times, notching up three centuries and even representing the Windies in a World Cup.

On Instagram, Pooran shared an emotional message: “Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field... it’s hard to put into words what that truly means to me.” He also reflected on the honor of leading the team as captain—a role that clearly meant a great deal to him.
Despite a hiccup in 2019 involving a ball-tampering suspension, Pooran bounced back to become a key figure in the team. He was named T20 vice-captain and eventually stepped up as captain, even leading the team to a 4-1 series victory over Australia. Though his stint as the permanent white-ball captain saw mixed fortunes—especially the early exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup—he still made a powerful impact.
His farewell from the international stage doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of him in cricket. Pooran is pivoting toward franchise leagues, where he’s already a big name. From the IPL with the Lucknow Super Giants to commitments in Major League Cricket and The Hundred, he's keeping busy and still thrilling fans worldwide.
Cricket West Indies acknowledged his departure with heartfelt appreciation, calling him a game-changer whose influence will echo for years to come. His last outing for the West Indies was back in December 2024 in a T20 match against Bangladesh, and while he hasn’t played an ODI since July 2023, his presence on the field will be sorely missed.
So, while this might be goodbye to Pooran in international colors, it’s definitely not the end of his cricketing story. Here’s to a legend who played with passion, flair, and an unshakable love for the maroon.
