Nissanka's Masterclass Powers Sri Lanka Towards Dominant Test Victory
What a Test match it has been in Colombo! If you're just tuning in, Sri Lanka have completely outclassed Bangladesh in the second Test, and a large part of the credit goes to the sheer brilliance of Pathum Nissanka. His composure at the crease, his shot selection, and his ability to dominate without taking undue risks—it was a lesson in patient, high-quality Test batting.
After Bangladesh were dismissed for just 247 in their first innings, Sri Lanka responded emphatically. Nissanka followed up his monumental 187 in the previous Test with another masterclass—an unbeaten 146 on day two. It was a flawless innings, chanceless and methodical, stitched together with 18 boundaries. He made it look easy, and when paired with the experienced Dinesh Chandimal, the two built a towering 194-run partnership for the second wicket. Chandimal missed out on a century, falling for 93 while attempting a risky reverse sweep.

Despite some early movement and a few breakthroughs by Bangladesh in the next session, Sri Lanka’s batters held firm. Lahiru Udara gave them a flying start with a solid 40, and even the nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya did his part by sticking around and seeing off dangerous spells. By the time Nissanka finally fell for 158 on day three—caught after a mistimed defensive push—he had already laid the foundation for a commanding total. Kusal Mendis then took the mantle with an aggressive 84, ensuring Sri Lanka’s lead swelled to a massive 211 runs.
Bangladesh’s bowlers toiled hard, with Taijul Islam being the pick of the lot, claiming a five-wicket haul. But the truth is, the Bangladeshi attack just didn’t have the consistency or penetration needed to trouble Sri Lanka’s top and middle order for long.
And now, Sri Lanka are closing in on a resounding innings victory. Bangladesh find themselves in tatters at 6 for 115 in their second innings. Their top and middle order—Anamul, Shadman, Mominul, Mushfiqur—never got going. Captain Najmul Shanto and Mehedy Hasan fell cheaply as well. Only Litton Das remains unbeaten, with the scoreboard offering little hope.
With Dhananjaya de Silva and Jayasuriya sharing the wickets, Sri Lanka need just four more to seal the win—and it looks inevitable. The energy in the field, the sharp spin bowling, and the pressure created by a mountainous lead—it’s been too much for Bangladesh to handle.
So here we are, watching a well-rounded performance from a Sri Lankan side in form, riding high on the confidence of a dominant first Test showing and now backing it up with bat and ball. If there’s one takeaway from this match, it’s this: Pathum Nissanka is fast becoming one of the most reliable and stylish batters in Test cricket today.
