Over 50 Canadians Sickened in Salami-Linked Salmonella Outbreak
Hey everyone, just a quick but important update on a developing health concern that’s affecting multiple provinces here in Canada. If you’ve bought or eaten salami recently—especially in Ontario, Alberta, or Manitoba—this is something you’ll want to pay close attention to.
More than 50 people have fallen ill from a salmonella outbreak that's now being linked to a recall of specific salami products. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, at least 57 people have gotten sick, and seven of them have had to be hospitalized . The majority of cases— 44—were reported in Alberta , with another 13 in Ontario .

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency, or CFIA, has issued a recall notice for three types of salami as of June 10th. The products in question are: Rea’s Genoa Salami Sweet , Genoa Salami Hot , and Mild Genova Salami by Bona . These were sold across grocery stores, specialty markets, restaurants, cafes, and butcher shops, mainly in Alberta, Ontario, and Manitoba.
The real concern here is that many people became sick after eating sandwiches made with the recalled salami or buying it from deli counters. What’s tricky is that contaminated food may not look or smell any different. So even if it seems fine—it could still carry salmonella.
Most reported cases occurred between mid-April and late May, but it’s important to understand that salmonella symptoms can show up anywhere between 11 and 45 days after infection. That means more cases could still surface in the coming weeks.
Symptoms of salmonella include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea . In severe cases, especially for young children, the elderly, pregnant individuals, or people with compromised immune systems, it can lead to serious complications—and even hospitalization.
No deaths have been reported so far, which is good news, but the outbreak is being taken seriously. Health officials are urging anyone who may have these recalled products at home to either return them or throw them out immediately .
So again, if you’ve picked up deli meats recently, double-check the labels. Better to be safe than sorry. And if you’ve been feeling unwell and think this might be connected, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider.
Let’s stay alert, and as always, take care of each other.
