Rasmus Højlund Transfer to Inter Milan on Brink of Collapse Amid United Standoff

So, here's the latest twist in the Rasmus Højlund transfer saga—and it’s not quite the move many expected just a few weeks ago. Manchester United’s £72 million striker, once touted as the next big thing, now finds himself at the center of a complicated and, frankly, frustrating negotiation that appears to be going nowhere fast.

Fabrizio Romano has weighed in—when he speaks, the football world listens. According to him, talks between Manchester United and Inter Milan regarding Højlund are currently "not advancing." The Italian giants had shown strong interest and opened discussions with both United and the player’s camp as far back as May. But now, it seems the deal is losing momentum. Why? A few key reasons are emerging.

Firstly, Inter Milan’s approach simply doesn’t align with what United are looking for. Inter were hoping to structure a deal around a loan with an option—or even obligation—to buy. United, on the other hand, are standing firm: they want a permanent sale or nothing at all. No swaps, no installments, no strings attached. They’re keen to recoup as much of the original outlay as possible and aren’t entertaining half-measures.

To complicate matters further, Inter Milan are already making moves elsewhere. They’re closing in on signing Ange-Yoan Bonny from Parma, a young striker they’re investing in for the future. On top of that, their academy talent Francesco Pio Esposito is showing real promise—he recently scored in a friendly against River Plate, and that might be enough for Inter to rethink their need for Højlund altogether.

And as if that wasn’t enough, Inter tried to sweeten the deal by offering Mehdi Taremi in return—a 32-year-old forward who managed just three goals in 43 games last season. Let’s just say United weren’t impressed. The club politely declined the offer and made it very clear: they have no intention of accepting a swap deal, especially not for a player who's not even in form.

Despite a rough season where he only managed four Premier League goals, Højlund himself isn’t throwing in the towel. He’s made public statements affirming his commitment to the club, saying he has a contract until 2030 and still believes in the United project. Admirable, but whether that’s enough to keep him at Old Trafford remains to be seen—especially if the right offer lands on the table.

As it stands, Højlund’s future is in limbo. Inter Milan are backing off, United aren’t budging on their terms, and other clubs haven’t stepped up with the kind of money United want. So, unless something dramatic happens soon, don’t be surprised if Højlund is still wearing red when the new season kicks off.

It’s one of those classic modern football transfer stories—big money, stalled talks, and a lot of waiting around for the right moment. For now, the clock ticks on, but the deal? It’s on standby.
