Red Arrows to Dazzle Northern Skies with Weekend Flypast Across the North West
This weekend, the skies over the North West are set to come alive with one of the most thrilling aerial spectacles the UK has to offer. Yes, the iconic Red Arrows—the Royal Air Force’s elite aerobatic display team—are returning to our skies, and if you're anywhere from Yorkshire to the Lake District, you might just catch a glimpse of their unmistakable red trails cutting through the clouds.
The display is part of their journey to Northern Ireland for a performance at the Armed Forces Day event on Saturday, June 21. Their outbound flight path offers a rare treat for aviation enthusiasts and casual onlookers alike. Taking off from their base at RAF Waddington in Suffolk at 10:30am, they’ll make their way across the Midlands and into the northern landscape.
By 10:48am, the jets will be overhead at Chelmorton in the Peak District, before sweeping past Glossop and the hills above Oldham. Those in Saddleworth and surrounding areas should have an excellent view as the aircraft roar overhead at approximately 10:51am. Just minutes later, they’ll be soaring across the skies between Rochdale and Huddersfield, and then heading toward Hellifield in North Yorkshire around 10:56am.

From there, they’ll track northwest through Lancashire, eventually reaching the beautiful Lake Windermere in Cumbria at about 11:01am. The Red Arrows will then cross over Whitehaven and continue out across the Irish Sea. So, whether you're hiking in the Peaks or lakeside in Cumbria, look up—you may just spot this world-renowned team mid-flight.
But that’s not all. Their return journey later the same day also brings another opportunity to catch them. Around 5:56pm, the Red Arrows will be seen over Lancaster, continuing across North Yorkshire, including areas like Malham and Grassington, before heading toward York. From there, they’ll cut across East Yorkshire, passing near Goole and Howden, and finally descend back to RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk by 6:26pm.
Of course, while the scheduled flight paths are always exciting to follow, keep in mind that exact timings and routes can change depending on weather conditions or operational requirements. Still, these flypasts are always worth planning for—even if it's just a spontaneous moment of awe as you hear the jets thundering above.
If you've never seen the Red Arrows in action, this is your chance. Known for their speed, agility, and pinpoint precision, they’ve become a symbol of British aviation excellence. Their tight formations and synchronized maneuvers have captivated audiences across the globe—and now it’s our turn again.
So set your reminders, charge your phone for that perfect mid-flight photo, and keep your eyes on the skies this Saturday. Whether you're in Manchester, York, or the hills of the Lakes, the Red Arrows are coming—and you won’t want to miss them.
