Remembering Ananda Lewis: A Radiant Life, A Brave Fight
I’m heartbroken to share that Ananda Lewis, the vibrant voice of a generation and beloved former MTV VJ, has passed away at the age of 52. She died on June 11, after a nearly seven-year battle with stage four breast cancer — a battle she fought with grace, courage, and deeply personal conviction. Her sister, Lakshmi Emory, shared the news in a touching Facebook post that simply read: “She’s free, and in His heavenly arms. Lord, rest her soul.”

If you were coming of age in the late '90s and early 2000s, you couldn’t miss Ananda. She was the face of MTV — hosting Total Request Live , Hot Zone , and Spring Break with that rare mix of intelligence, charm, and authenticity. Her impact was undeniable. She made space for thoughtful conversations in a music-obsessed world and gave a powerful platform to voices that mattered. Her influence extended beyond music TV, too — with her own talk show, The Ananda Lewis Show , and later as a correspondent for The Insider .
But Ananda’s legacy isn’t just about entertainment. It's also about choices — the kind that take incredible strength. She revealed in 2020 that she had been privately battling stage 3 breast cancer for two years. Ananda made the difficult decision early on to decline a double mastectomy, hoping to heal through holistic and integrative methods. For her, it was about maintaining the quality of life and staying true to what felt right for her body.
Later, she bravely admitted that she had second thoughts. By 2022, her cancer had reached stage four. She was candid about the physical toll it took on her, the emotional reckoning, and the limitations the pandemic placed on treatment options. Her honesty was striking. She said in an interview that she once spoke directly to death, lying in bed for weeks, feeling the weight of it. But even then, she made peace with her path: “I want to be able to look back on my life and say, ‘I did that exactly how I wanted to.’”
Ananda died on the same day her 14-year-old son, Langston, graduated from middle school. She leaves behind her husband, Harry Smith — the younger brother of Will Smith — and a son who now carries her fire and her legacy.
Through it all, Ananda never stopped teaching, inspiring, and giving. Even in her final months, she wrote powerfully about cancer prevention and the importance of living fully. Her last Instagram posts radiated love and appreciation for the people and music that shaped her life.
Ananda Lewis lived brightly, spoke boldly, and loved deeply. She wasn't just a host, a journalist, or a TV personality — she was a force. And now, she’s at peace. Rest in power, Ananda. Your light stays with us.
