Remembering Chase Stegall: A Tragic Loss Felt Beyond the Field
Today, I'm speaking with a heavy heart as we reflect on the life and sudden passing of Chase Stegall—the son of Winnipeg Blue Bombers legend and CFL Hall of Famer, Milt Stegall. This news has shaken not just the football world, but an entire community that watched Chase grow into a young man with endless potential.
Chase was only 20 years old. A sophomore at DePaul University in Chicago, he was a standout midfielder on the men’s soccer team. Those who knew him describe a young man full of energy, kindness, and an unshakable drive. He played 16 of DePaul’s 17 matches last season—an integral part of the team, both in performance and in spirit.

What makes this loss even more heartbreaking is that Chase wasn’t just a promising athlete; he was a cherished teammate, a loyal friend, and a beloved son. It’s hard to imagine the pain the Stegall family must be feeling right now. For Milt Stegall, who gave so much to the game of football and to the city of Winnipeg, this loss is deeply personal—and it’s one that the Blue Bombers family is mourning with him.
Statements from both the Winnipeg Football Club and DePaul University have echoed the same message: grief, disbelief, and compassion. Wade Miller, president of the Winnipeg Football Club, said it best—Chase had a promising future, and his loss is being felt across the entire Blue Bombers community. Meanwhile, DePaul’s president Rob Manuel and athletic staff remembered Chase for his warmth and strength of character, qualities that extended far beyond the soccer field.
As of now, the details surrounding his sudden death have not been disclosed, and perhaps they never need to be. What’s most important is the legacy he leaves behind. This wasn’t just a talented young athlete—we’re remembering a son, a student, a friend.
For those of us watching from the outside, it’s a reminder to hold our loved ones close, to never take a moment for granted, and to lift up those who are hurting. To Milt, Darlene, and the entire Stegall family: we see your pain, we share your sorrow, and we stand with you in this moment of unimaginable loss.
Rest in peace, Chase Stegall. You will not be forgotten.
