Richard Madeley Soldiers On With Fractured Wrists Live on GMB
So, this morning’s Good Morning Britain had a surprising and pretty painful twist right from the very start. Just minutes into the live broadcast, Richard Madeley, one of the show’s main presenters, appeared on screen with a cast on his right wrist—and that was just the beginning of the story.
Richard, who’s now 69, revealed that over the weekend, he had quite a nasty fall while walking down a steep pavement in France. He was moving quickly when the pavement, which he described as loose, suddenly flipped up and caused him to trip forward. In his words, it was a battle between him and gravity—and gravity won. The result? A double fracture of his wrist. Ouch.

As the show kicked off, Susanna Reid—his long-time co-host—greeted viewers with the usual morning energy before turning to Richard and asking him to explain what had clearly caught everyone’s attention: his wrist in a heavy cast. In classic Richard fashion, he cracked a joke about having a “good break,” even though it was clearly a painful one.
Despite the injury, Richard powered through the broadcast, refusing to dwell on the pain. When Susanna asked if it was sore, he replied rather stoically, "I'm not discussing the pain threshold—we don’t think about pain." You’ve got to admire that stiff-upper-lip attitude, though you could tell from his voice—which sounded a bit huskier than usual—that he wasn’t quite himself.
Fans were quick to react online, with some playfully comparing him to Keith Lemon because of the bandage, while others genuinely expressed concern and support. It's not the first challenge Richard’s faced recently either. With talk of a shake-up at ITV and reports suggesting his role was under review earlier this year, it’s been a tense time professionally too. Still, despite contract negotiations and rumours of reduced hours, Richard is very much back—if a little battered.
Through all of it, Susanna remained the steady anchor beside him, offering support and even gently poking fun, which helped lighten the mood. She welcomed him back warmly and wished him a speedy recovery before they moved on to cover serious topics of the day, including protests in Los Angeles and the NHS’s urgent need for new blood donors.
Honestly, seeing Richard show up and deliver the news with a double wrist fracture is a reminder of just how unpredictable live television can be—and how much resilience some presenters bring to the job. Let’s just hope he takes it a bit easier next time he’s on a steep French pavement.
